Jewish billionaire Jay Bloom says he and his son Sean were offered two seats on the ill-fated Titan submersible but declined to join over safety concerns and scheduling issues.
The American real estate developer, who is based in Las Vegas, said Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman ended up taking their available seats.
Dawood and his son were among the five people who died instantly when the submersible imploded on a mission to explore the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic.
“Every time I see a picture of that Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son, I think how easily that could have been me and my 20-year-old son – but for the grace of God,” Bloom told Reuters.

I only know what I've been hearing from others who are experts, but one thing that really jumped out at me was that the one viewing port/hatch was not rated for the depth, and that at depth the viewport deflected inwards over an inch.

Sounds like the sub tours were basically dangled as bait to lure investors.
If I was a billionaire, I am not sure a private ride down to the Titanic on an untested sub built by amateurs using novel methods and materials would be enticing, but it obviously was to some.

Think of it this way: The maximum possible pressure differential between the outside (space) and inside of a spacecraft pressure vessel is one atmosphere (assuming normal atmospheric pressure inside). But the pressure differential at Titanic’s depth is about 400 atmospheres. HUGE difference in the strength needed to maintain structural integrity. And you’re right, there is also the difference between trying to contain the pressure inside versus standing up to pressure from outside. That requires different material characteristics.

Physics is so outdated. It’s the science of the past, and likely racist, too. Everyone knows that anything new that a “progressive” dreams up is automatically superior to whatever came before, especially because those “old” things were likely invented by racist white males.
On the other hand, maybe there’s a reason that all other deep-diving subs have viewports no bigger than drink coasters.

Actually the Titan had only made 3 dives to the Titantic.
It had made other dives but only to the depth of the Titanic 3 times
