I hate the word fill-in-the-blankphobia. It is never a fear of something. It’s usually disagreement with something. That’s not fear. We live in a world where disagreement means fear-of and saying something about it constitutes a physical attack requiring a physical response.
In my final year of work at General Dynamics the manager of HR came to my desk and sat in my guest chair. (This never happened. HR always summoned people to his office.) Leaning forward he whispered that I’d been reported for “incorrect thinking” by a black technician. As I recall the conversation it was about female genital mutilation in Arab countries. I said it wasn’t right that they should do it here. He said it was their culture and therefore their right. We ended it when I said, “let’s agree to disagree. Have a great day.” But I was reported for incorrect thinking. The HR manager said that he could ignore it if nothing else was said, but if there was another complaint, he’d have to take action. He recommended I never speak to another black employee. I didn’t. I never spoke to anyone I didn’t already know. A former Soviet citizen said working in the environment here was worse than being in the Soviet Union.
