Suburbs came about after mandatory public education and the railroads, which came about in the 1840s. Scarsdale is a commuter rail suburb. Its adult male residents have endured for about 100 years a half hour commute each way to midtown Manhattan in exchange for being able to live in a larger and better house.

If you have ad valorum taxation to fund public schooling, people who want to live in houses that are large and fancy will want to build in a taxing jurisdiction of large and fancy houses.

People that are paying say $30,000 a year in property tax don’t want to pay $50,000 a year in property tax so people that only pay $10,000 a year get $30,000 a year in public services.

Scarsdale residents have been commuting for about 100 years. Teachers and others should have a seat on Metro North and enjoy a half hour ride each way each working day equally as much.

“They’re already augmenting wealthy neighborhoods with private security in LA.”

In 1987 there were plenty of “armed response” signs in LA.

“In the fall of 1911, display ads began to appear in the Los Angeles Times offering “The most exclusive and highest class residence community in the most desirable residential city in America—Fremont Place.” Ingram and Barry gushed further: “There is no other residence property in Los Angeles to compare with it—no property which gives the man of means such opportunity for exclusiveness—such unique home attractions.” Then came the real sales pitch: “Considering its character, its elegance—the prices at which this property is obtainable are exceedingly low. Because of its extremely high character—the property is necessarily limited—and those who wish to secure a homesite here must avail themselves of the opportunity at once.” There would, in fact, be quite a bit of interest but no mad rush of “men of means”; it would be nearly three years before the first house was built.”

“With the entire “West End” actually little more than prairie, it would be a while before the trees provided any shade or beauty. It is surprising, when one thinks about it, how many men of means and their families were willing to put up with little natural vegetation and only sparse settlement for as long as they did. It wasn’t until the late ‘20s that Windsor Square, Hancock Park, and Fremont Place would even begin to have the lush Garden District–like charm that many would be leaving behind in old West Adams.”

“AT THE TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY, just about every acre south and west of downtown Los Angeles was covered with barley...at least, this is the impression one gets when reading of the amazing development of the city at the time”

“Improvements to Burke’s new development began in December 1903, and, using the best materials and craftsmanship, lasted until April 1905, with the public invited to view the results from that month. The street was to be privately owned and gated—very much along the lines of many American suburban developments of the time that followed St. Louis’s pattern of Benton, Vandeventer, Westmoreland, and Portland places. Burke gave his exclusive new street the name Berkeley Square”

“‘We love our Muslim neighbors, as long as they’re millionaires.’” (Having a modest number of wealthy neighbors of color may convince privileged white homeowners that the system is just.)”
I was unaware that Muslims are “of color”. I thought Islam was a religion.”

I have witnessed how the Marxist infiltrators have gone all out trying and often succeeding coopting into their spider web any and all Spanish-speaking people, people from various Asian countries, and Native Americans. The native Americans, who have historically been conservative Christians and people not judging others by the color of their skin, rejected the Marxists soundly for many decades, but the Marxists have not given up in their unrelenting propaganda campaign to divide the population on the basis of skin color.

Interesting detail. One hundred twenty years ago, St. Louis served as a model for city development. Now it is a model of what not to do.

Phil Ochs, RIP

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
And I'm glad the commies were thrown out
Of the AFL-CIO board
And I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
As long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, i'm a liberal.

I’m just a typical American boy, from a typical American town
I believe in God, and Senator Dodd, and keeping old Castro down
And when it came my time to serve, I knew better dead than red
But when I got to my old draft board, buddy this is what I said
