The lengthy absence from public view of China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang has sparked furious online speculation, while once again highlighting China's secrecy.
The 57-year-old has not been seen in public for 23 days - his last reported engagements were on 25 June.
Appointed to his post last December, Mr Qin was seen as a trusted aide of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
As one of the best known faces of the Chinese government, Mr Qin's prolonged absence has not only been scrutinised by diplomats and China watchers, but also ordinary Chinese people.
When asked about his whereabouts on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said she had no information to provide.

Speculation appears to be centering on some kind of affair or "personal indiscretion," but that doesn't seem to be a likely reason for somebody quite as high-profile as he is to disappear. Pure speculation on my part, but my read of Qin Gang is that he's more interested in constructive engagement with other countries than the Wang Yi style of pure pressure. Come all without
Come all within
You’ll not see nothing like the Mighty Qin.

Intelligence community sources told RedState that Qin Gang, the new Ambassador, was sent to the United States specifically to attempt to shut down any investigation into information Dong brought forward. “
China (or at least HK) is abuzz that he had a mistress, who was a HK TV presenter. The rumor also is that she recently gave birth to his son. Qin Gang rose quickly in the Foreign Ministry ranks due to Xi Jinping
Maybe they should check on of the Chicom Police Stations in the US he could be in their klink, or on his way back to the motherland.
Qin Gang, Wang Yi and now another Mao pops up. They may be inscrutable but the names give me a chuckle.
I think we are watching the end of the CCP.
