David Weiss requested it this week; Garland said it was in the public interest.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss as a special counsel in his investigation of President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden, Garland announced on Friday.
Weiss asked Garland to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday and Garland said he concluded it was in the public interest after considering the request.
A senior Department of Justice official told reporters that this is the first time Weiss has asked to be appointed special counsel. Weiss himself has said the same before, pushing back on claims by an IRS whistleblower.
"This appointment confirms my commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests," Garland said. "It also reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate in dependently based only on the facts and the law."
Garland said Weiss "will continue to have the authority and responsibility that he has previously exercised to oversee the investigation and decide where, when and whether to file charges."
Prosecutors also wrote in court filings that they intend to drop the misdemeanor tax charges against Hunter Biden in Delaware and instead bring them in California and Washington, D.C. -- the venues where prosecutors say the alleged misconduct occurred.

§ 600.3 Qualifications of the Special Counsel.
(a) An individual named as Special Counsel shall be a lawyer with a reputation for integrity and impartial decisionmaking, and with appropriate experience to ensure both that the investigation will be conducted ably, expeditiously and thoroughly, and that investigative and prosecutorial decisions will be supported by an informed understanding of the criminal law and Department of Justice policies. The Special Counsel shall be selected from outside the United States Government. Special Counsels shall agree that their responsibilities as Special Counsel shall take first precedence in their professional lives, and that it may be necessary to devote their full time to the investigation, depending on its complexity and the stage of the investigation.
How can the republicans subpoena cats involved with the special counselor’s investigation?
Does anyone else find that just insulting? He does this with every authoritarian over-reach of thuggery they are up to. They issue court orders at Trump so he can't do what Garland does every day?

Garland will make sure Biden (and all other Deep State tools) are totally protected and found not guilty of any meaningful Charges. There must also be a Pardon for minor Charges, to make it look legit.
There aren't enough lamp posts in D.C., if every government employee who's on the take is REALLY investigated for Treason, in a venue that is NOT part of the game....

I’ve been pointing out for years that the FBi and DoJ have a million of their own rules, and the waive and suspend them like they mean nothing on a whim.
They lecture on the import of their fabulous procedures - and just ignore when it benefits the Democrats and Woke entities.
Listen to Barr and Comey - they both simply waive or suspend processes when it’s Hillary of Joseph Biden.
