The COVID mask holdouts
American Thinker ^ | 14 August A.D. 2023 | Douglas Flint

My son came back from shopping today a little stunned, like he had seen a ghost. He was shocked to see a person in the grocery store still wearing a COVID mask. He immediately leapt to an analogy that has kept me laughing all day.

Long after World War II ended, Japanese soldiers remained hidden in the jungles and caves of the Pacific islands either unaware or unwilling to accept that Japan had surrendered. It had been drilled into them that surrender would not only disgrace themselves and that they would never be welcomed back home, but further it would disgrace their families to the tenth generation. The last known of these holdouts, Teruo Nakamura, surrendered in 1975, but knowing the breadth of the territory Japan had occupied and fought on, the inaccessibility of the jungles, mountains, and caves, it is safe to assume many more never came out and died unknown in hiding or who knows, a couple could still be alive in hiding.

Such are the COVID holdouts. Most of us knew the masking and isolations was all nonsense. Even though they’ll never admit it our friends on the Left know the truth also and quietly threw away their masks. But to many, the mask was more then a health thing. It was a political statement and that statement was “I am not one of those MAGA creeps.” For them, like the Japanese living in jungles 10, 20, and even 30 years after the war had ended, they can never surrender. Their entire identity is tied up in that mask.

When I see people with masks today, they make me nervous because I assume they are sick.

Logic says to me that if a person has COPD wearing a mask is a very unwise thing to do.

Adding another layer of obstruction is the last thing that a COPD patient should do.

Yup, the certainty of further breathing obstruction vs the belief in the possibility of avoiding a potentially fatal infection.

Fear usually overrides logic.

It’s more effective to wear at least 3 masks at a time

I actually think the turning point against COVID hysteria is when the media floated the idea of rectal covid testing. Up to that point the hysteria was increasing by the hour.

Yup, even the most devout Branch Covidians weren't looking forward to "shed 'em and spread 'em" in order to enter a health care facility or grocery store.

You are exactly right. With COPD, a mask gives you barely enough oxygen to take a breath.

That said, my GP and Endocrinologist last week were both wearing masks to see patients. I did not ask why.

I recently saw an older couple out on a bike ride both wearing matching black masks. Our local hospital and clinic which had an absolute policy of wearing masks for the last three years finally ended the requirement. I could liken this to the persistence of wearing foul smelling acicifidity bags decades after the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic when health officials recommended them to ward off the flu virus.

However, I think there are other factors. First, is the death of common sense in this country. Many of us with even a rudimentary understanding of the size of viruses knew that a single piece of cloth would be as effective at blocking the virus as a chain link fence would be at blocking mosquitoes. Second, public health officials gave conflicting stories about the need or effectiveness of masks and were never challenged by the media. Fauci initially said masks for the general public weren’t recommended but which morphed into masking and even double masking without any evidence or studies to support masking. Third, the outright censorship of anyone who dared to question masking or its effectiveness. Doctors and serious academics who raised questions were censored or even threatened with loosing their medical license if they dared to question the masking or other aspects of managing COVID. Lastly, politicians especially state governors who recognized that COVID could give them unprecedented power over people and their lives. They exercised that power without restraint and often based on bad advise to dictatorial levels closing businesses and even churches, shutting down schools and putting entire states on virtual lockdown. This along with the media sowing panic scared people to death.

For all the screeching that Karens did regarding people wearing masks, there’s also Karens that care that people are “still” wearing masks.

And several are posting on this thread.

I live in NJ as well. Every few days, I see someone alone in their car with the windows closed, wearing a mask.

We are indeed surrounded by idiots. Can't wait to move out of this state, which was a great place to be 30-40 years ago. Today, not so much.

A mask will make a lung problem worse (unless you are trying to keep smoke or dust out)

And if you have the Fauci Covid you are 1.4 times more likely to die than if you weren’t wearing the mask.

Mask wearing without good reason is a mental disorder, just like liberalism.

There are explanations that have some rational reasons. Maybe they are really sick. Stay away from them. Maybe they just want you to think they are really sick so you will stay away from them.
