“Ohio” was named after the river, which is from Seneca (Iroquoian) ohi:yo’, a proper name from ohi:yo:h, literally “good river.”

Exactly. For the record, the Iroquois were not native to the Ohio Valley. They came as conquerors, wiping out entire nations during their sweep through.

If you don’t like naming things after the leaders in the wars of Europeans vs. Indians, how about if we strip the name Tecumseh off every road, township, school, park and everything else around here. We’ll even change William T. Sherman’s middle name to Thomas.

This isn’t liberalism. It’s totalitarian collectivism.

Yup—1984 was not supposed to be a government handbook.

It’s 110 in Gila Bend. In Buckeye, it’s 102.

That was my first thought, too. After all, most of John Wayne’s characters got along really well with the Indians.

My grade school was named after Warren Harding.

If they keep this up the Alamo will need changing.

Wake me when they change New York.

Called New Amsterdam before it was taken from the Dutch, it’s named for a Duke of York that I’ve read was instrumental in bringing slave trade to the New World.

Wayne County, Michigan is also named after General Wayne.
= = =

Change it to Wane County, or maybe Waning County.

That’s the trend of things today.

Big problem. “Wayne County,Michigan” is the location of Detroit which had its street plan laid out by Gen. Anthony Wayne. And there’s Wayne State University. Streets, buildings, government agencies by the hundreds are identified as Wayne. Police, deputies, hospital staff and others will need new uniforms and so on.

When the City of East Detroit formally changed its name to Eastpointe, to avoid the slander that it was part of the decrepit City of Detroit, it was revealed the chief funding source for the ballot proposal effort was the owner of the biggest sign company in the region. His support for the pro name change politicians was large. Made off like a bandit changing signs.
