Trump calls six-week abortion bans ‘terrible’

Former president Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP presidential primary, said a state abortion law signed by his top challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which bans the procedure after six weeks, is “terrible.”

In April, DeSantis signed the controversial law, which will go into effect if the Florida Supreme Court upholds the state’s 15-week ban on abortion that he signed into law last spring. At a hearing this month, the Florida justices appeared open to upholding the limiting ban.

Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” criticized DeSantis for being “willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban.”

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said.

DeSantis’s six-week ban — which includes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and “fatal fetal abnormalities” — would outlaw the procedure in Florida before many people know they’re pregnant.

The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.

Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.

Trump declined to say what time frame he thinks is appropriate for an abortion ban and instead insisted that he would “sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something, and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”

“Both sides are going to like me,” he added. “I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable.” ***

Could you make your pro-abortion stance any more clearer?

People here are discussing electoral politics not philosophy.

So am I! Does anyone deny that a candidate would garner more support by having a solid, unshakable position on this and other ones instead of being wishy-washy and weak and willing to say whatever it takes to win? I can't respect someone much less vote for them to represent me if he/she won't commit to a position and be honest about it.

You do understand that a candidate taking your position, a candidate you find “acceptable”, is committing suicide, right?

I think there are a whole lot of voters who yearn for a leader who is unafraid to take a stand and mean it. Far too few people in Congress have a spine. It's deplorable that the Democrats are the only ones unwilling to compromise on abortion. Look how drastic their position is yet it is out of step with a majority of Americans' views.

Very true. Yet somehow that situation is always brought up when early abortion bans are discussed.

Whatever time limit the Florida law set, Trump would have been against it because DeSantis signed the law.

Exactly! Just like Trump had to take a pro-Disney stand because RDS scored major points in his fight against Disney.

The federal government also needs law on abortion, for it’s own employees that it supplies medical care to nationwide and worldwide, what should that law be?

Let the states decide

_______________________________

I keep seeing this reply over and over again in this thread. And you people clearly mean that if a state takes a pro-abortion position, then it’s OK.

It’s not OK. Trump did the world a huge favor by appointing 3 justices who were instrumental in getting Roe v. Wade overturned.

But now? Now Trump has the gall to criticize pro-life states like Florida?

All in the name of political expediency? Trump is critical of DeSantis and his pro-life stance simply because Trump wasn’t smart enough to make this a campaign plank.

That’s a terrible problem with our nation. The pro-abort side seems to be winning here. Florida may have its 6-week ban, and I’m not lifting a finger to overturn it, but the state GOP could lose some legislative seats as a result.

It is a good idea to put that money into encouraging young couples to actually stay together and keep their babies.

Shouldn’t even be a national issue.

Really? Then why is Trump making it a national issue? Worse, he’s made it a personal issue as he’s taking on a pro-abort stance.

How? By him wanting to negotiate with Democrats and by his personal stand against Florida and it’s strict anti-abortion policies.

Those that believe Trump CANNOT win the general want him to ban abortion as well. That should attract independents and women /s

Wonder how DeSantis would answer the ‘abortion’ question……..

So many here are blinded by emotion, borderline authoritarianism and none of them believe or trust Trump. No wonder the GOP party is full of neocon globalist bench warmers…..blame the emotional one issue ‘conservative’ voters.

I’m looking forward to leaving politics after Trump leaves the stage. You can’t fix stupid (voters). I’m not alone either.

Yesterday, he said men will give birth. But none of this is surprising. He was always pro-choice and pro-LGBT.

I will give Trump credit for this: Appointing 3 Supreme Court justices who were instrumental in getting Roe v. Wade overturned.

Yet now? Trump has flip flopped on the issue and is pro-abortion.

I will have a hard time getting behind him if he doesn’t stop the baby murdering.

For nearly fifty years Conservatives prayed, voted and waited for the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. Trump's Supreme Court majority finally did it .. giving individual states the power to set their own abortion laws

Guess what, Delta, **you're** up. I suggest you get involved in your house of worship, community and local and state governments, work diligently on changing hearts and minds, find the best local candidates and help elect them.

It's time to stop looking to the federal government to do what is now directly up to you.

DeSantis has turned this into an issue. But Trump messed up, he could have just said “States can do what they want but they’ll have to deal with the consequences both good and bad”.

Trump is okay with murder of viable babies.

A baby is not viable outside the womb at six weeks.

Medical viability is 24 weeks gestational age and is dependent upon birth weight and the availability of advanced medical care.

You seem to forget that it was Trump that put abortion back in the states domain.

______________________________________

And for that we appreciate him. We owe him a huge deal of thanks for his Supreme Court picks.

But now he’s flip flopped on the issue. He wants to negotiate with democrats (his words). He’s even gone so far as to criticize the most anti-abortion state in the nation.

Why is that? Can you explain it? And can you do so without hating on DeSantis as usual?
