I just looked it up. By golly, you’re right. Back in the old days, I spent quite a few years in Pittsburgh. And I listened to a lot of Pirate baseball on the radio. And I never once heard the name “Wilver”.

So I do not blame myself. I blame KDKA radio for leading me astray.

Many players have had nicknames or short versions of their given name.

How many people know about Harold Reese? He was better known as Pee Wee Reese.

How about Edwin Snider? Better known as Duke Snider.
