Civilians must prepare for all-out war with Russia in the next 20 years, a top Nato military official has warned.
While armed forces are primed for the outbreak of war, private citizens need to be ready for a conflict that would require wholesale change in their lives, Adml Rob Bauer said on Thursday.
Large numbers of civilians will need to be mobilised in case of the outbreak of war and governments should put in place systems to manage the process, Adml Bauer told reporters after a meeting of Nato defence chiefs in Brussels.
“We have to realise it’s not a given that we are in peace. And that’s why we [Nato forces] are preparing for a conflict with Russia.
“But the discussion is much wider. It is also the industrial base and also the people that have to understand they play a role.”
Adml Bauer, a Dutch naval officer who is chairman of Nato’s Military Committee, praised Sweden for asking all of its citizens to brace for war ahead of the country formally joining the alliance.
Stockholm’s move, announced earlier this month, has led to a surge in volunteers for the country’s civil defence organisation and a spike in sales of torches and battery-powered radios.

How’s about we just transition away from NATO in the next few years instead?
NATO will not be around much longer. It will shatter without US/UK. If war come—how many NATO members will fight. some will be neural (France-Spain), some will fight (Germany-UK, Italy) Others may well join the Russians! (Poland and Hungary Bulgaria, Turkey). When war comes, not if but when, it will be a World War and be fought on every continent. The world will be changed forever, new maps, new borders, new governments.

What BS, is not going to happen. Russia is moving for stronger BRICS ties and has no interest or ability to invade and make war with the West.
If Russia can’t defeat Ukraine, what makes them think Russia wants or could invade anyone else?
Translation: We provoked a proxy war with Russia in Ukraine. We getting our asses kicked. So, we demand our citizens be conscripted and sent off to die trying to fight the Russians.

My dad had a department collegue who was a fighter pilot. Once the bilingual and Quebec preference garbage came in (mid 1960’s) he got out, got a phd in Physics and had a very successful academic career ( was even head of the department for a while).

Interesting analysis. Italy is the last country that would fight. The Germans are not exactly what Germans used to be, either. Poland is the most likely to fight.
But then I really doubt Russia is planning a wider war.

The period when you were avoiding military service included the Reagan years and the years of some of the
West’s greatest Cold War patriotism, weren’t you eligible for military service roughly 1980/81 through 2015/16 give or take?

That was Pierre Trudeau who was Prime Minister when you first became of military age.
The height of the Cold War, Thatcher, Reagan, Schmidt, Kohl Pope John, Lech Wałęsa, but you were avoiding military service and continued to do so for decades.
You were even avoiding military service when I was joining your Canadian Airborne Association to show solidarity with your Special Operations Regiment.
