Does this mean he will die of the bends??
I have always found it incredible that we want to extend mercy to the merciless.

“Does this mean he will die of the bends??”
No, the bends is as a result of blood-dissolved nitrogen coming out of solution as a result of the pressure release going from deep (high pressure) to shallow (low pressure) Exactly the same as soda bubbles appearing “out of nowhere” when the bottle is uncapped. That freed-up gas migrates towards muscles and produces intense pain.
There’s no dissolving gas nor pressure involved with this from of execution. It’s like being choked to death without any force, the brain just runs out of oxygen. I’m not sure whether there is panic or euphoria on the way. I can’t see it being panic-free, but as you might imagine, I don’t really care.
No. It means he will die very quickly and painlessly due to oxygen deprivation. Those of us who work with nitrogen and other inert gases in an industrial setting are VERY aware of the potential hazard associated with them. In confined spaces, they can displace air (and therefore, oxygen) without being noticed ... until somebody drops dead ... or (better) the O2 alarm goes off.
BTW, the "I GOTTA BREATHE!!!!" sensation is triggered by a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood, not by a lack of oxygen. He'll take a few breaths of pure N2, pass out, and next thing he's explaining himself to St. Peter ...
May God have mercy on his soul.

The “bends” occurs when a diver goes deep and then returns to the surface too fast.
Removing oxygen is the same as when pilots fly too high (or mountain climbers) without oxygen. You would get disorientated and then loose conscious and then die. No pain.
