Column: In an oddball way, Steve Garvey won California’s U.S. Senate debate
Los Angeles Times ^

*** But first, here’s another political paradox: The Republican Senate underdog was helped by his three major Democratic opponents in a televised debate Monday night. That’s because they ganged up on him and flailed away.

Garvey needs to attract enough Republican votes in California’s March 5 primary to finish second and qualify for the November general election ballot. And hardly anything unites a Republican candidate and the party faithful more than Democrats attacking that candidate.

Trump has proved that.

If Democrats don’t like Garvey, he must be the right candidate for the job, in the minds of many Republican voters....

Republican voters are outnumbered 2 to 1 by Democrats in California. The top two vote-getters among Senate candidates will advance to the November runoff, regardless of their party. So, Garvey’s hopes of finishing No. 2 — forget about No. 1 — depend on a big GOP turnout....

Democratic Rep. Adam B. Schiff of Burbank is the front-runner, based on polling. And he probably solidified that No. 1 position in the debate with his steady performance.

Garvey and Democratic Rep. Katie Porter of Irvine are running neck-and-neck for the No. 2 spot, with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) not far behind. There are lots of undecided voters.

The former major league all-star got help from his Democratic opponents in the debate.

“By the time the three Democrats got through with him, they were making his case to Republican voters,” says Dan Schnur, who teaches political communications at USC and UC Berkeley and is a former GOP operative. “Every time they’re criticizing Garvey, they’re sending a message to Republicans to consolidate behind him.”

No Republican has won a statewide race in California since 2006....

I’m rooting for him. Too bad I can’t vote for him.

No Republican has won a statewide race in California since 2006.

Someone really should look into that sometime.

In California, where I’ve made my home for 46 years,”replacement theory” isn’t a theory, it’s a fact. The state’s politics used to be moderately right of center — think Nixon, Reagan, Wilson — and a huge electoral college plus for the GOP in presidential election years. But the Marxists have been rigging elections in the state for years, a model for the rest of the ‘RAT crooks in the country, and their resulting Socialist policies have chased away white conservatives and businesses large & small. They have been replaced by a flood of mainly Latins, who vote for the party they think will give them the most “free” stuff. Now even the Latins don’t like the flood of illegal aliens who are swiping their jobs, depressing wages, and causing crime to skyrocket.

It is a well known fact, that the new “arrivals’ are mostly hurting their citizen compatriots. (always, regardless of nationality or country we are talking about).

They posses similar skills and so they compete mostly with their established compatriots. People with different background have less chance to be actually competing against them.
So it is quite common that new arrivals are not welcomed by their kind!

How to keep Schiff out: One of the democrat females finishes #2. Then republican voters collectively gather behind her and vote to keep Schiff out.

I hope that Garvey ends up in the runoff...I want to vote for somebody in November...

If 2 Democrats end up in the November runoff...I will skip the Senate section of the ballot...

I do not like the CA primary system at all...I like the old way...In November, each party had a candidate...You should be a registered GOP voter to vote for the GOP candidate in the primary...Old way was better...

Adam Schiff will probably win...I have been seeing his ads on TV...Garvey would not have enough money to spend on TV ads...

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following.

Friends on west coast noticed that a political post card, FN logo and endorsement for Garvey, also had note on address part that mailing was paid for by Schiff for Senate.

Can someone please explain the "paid for by Schiff for Senate?"
