Biden and senators on verge of striking immigration deal aimed at clamping down on illegal border crossings

Eagle Pass, Texas — A bipartisan group of lawmakers in Congress is on the verge of striking a deal with the Biden administration that would enact sweeping new border controls, including the authority to pause asylum processing during spikes in migrant crossings, three people familiar with the talks told CBS News.

After weeks of closed-door negotiations, the White House and a trio of senators could unveil an agreement as early as this week, the sources said, requesting anonymity due to the private nature of the conversations. The bill is designed to reduce the unprecedented levels of illegal crossings recorded along the southern border in the past three years.

While GOP Sen. James Lankford, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy and independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema are close to finalizing the compromise with the White House, any bipartisan immigration proposal would face an uphill battle in the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson and other conservative lawmakers have pushed for even stricter changes to the asylum system.

Divisions among Republican lawmakers over whether to support a border deal with Mr. Biden have also intensified after former President Donald Trump came out against it. At a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, Trump said he would "rather have no bill than a bad bill."

I thought this bill was dead? Is CBS late to the story or is this a new bill?

It won’t get past the House. Or I should say it better not get past the House.

Nothing’s changed the immigrants are invited they’re getting lots of freebies there overpopulating certain areas of the country it’s just still a mess and one that could have easily been avoided.

The invasion continues as does the drug crises and the human trafficking.

This is smoke and mirrors.

The countdown to a terrorist strike continues.

...including the authority to pause asylum processing during spikes in migrant crossings...

Uh-huh.

"the authority" - never to be used by a Dem Prez, and probably would need Congress approval to do so.

"pause asylum processing" - They'll still get in, but will be given a (paused) court date to appear for "processing" years in the future and released into the public (to disappear).

Yeah, I'm that cynical. Meanwhile, billions to flow immediately to a long-lost Ukraine war...

Biden won’t enforce it any more than he enforces existing law.

State of ... Voter Registration Form

Did you after ...2024, enter the US illegally?

Did you after ...2024, try to make, further or abet a fraudulent asylum or refugee claim?

Did you after ...2024, take an oath of naturalization after engaging in an illegal scheme to reside and/or work in the USA?

Make the ‘rats’ invasion scheme lead to a political dead end.

Biden didn’t and doesn’t need more money to clamp down and close the border. He just needs to do it.

This *deal* is jsut a scheme to line his own pockets and skim a profit off the backs of the middle class he and the leftists so despise.

The Senate is in the midst of yet another sell out America circle jerk.

Johnson and the House needs to reiterate that this BS deal is DOA in the House.

Yesterday Joe Biden Endorsed a Senate Deal to Expand Immigration by an additional 50,000 green cards annually, expedite work permits for illegal aliens released into your neighborhoods, provide taxpayer-funded lawyers to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs), and allow up to 35,000 illegal aliens to arrive at the border every week before imposing border controls......among other things.

If this story is credible then this “deal” is absurd. Currently Republicans hold the upper hand. Either Democrats will capitulate and close the border or they will lose so massively in November that they will become a memory. CBS can see this reality or they wouldn’t be trying to put lipstick on this pig.

Take your compromise and stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.

You people are being way too harsh.

Granted, this provides amnesty for a target number of 50 million illegal invaders, that is true.

But once that number is reached, the border is going to finally get shut down.

They promise.

> Trump said he would “rather have no bill than a bad bill.” <

Trump is right (again). This bill means nothing. It is a sick joke.

One, it evidently does nothing to repatriate the illegals already here.

And two, it gives the president the authority to shut down the border when certain conditions are meant. But the bill does not require it until extreme conditions are met.

Aide: Mr. President, we have reached a migrant threshold. Should we close the border?
Biden: On the advice of my boss Mr. Obama, no.

Then what? Then it’s business as usual.

Of course you’re correct. First off, the goal, though unachievable, should be ZERO illegal aliens. This bill concedes up to 1.8 million per year . But, to your point, the rats don’t want to close the border. They have absolutely no intention of using the authority granted by the bill. They really, really do think we’re stupid

“I thought this bill was dead?”

It’s dead, since Musk came out against it...and he has some SERIOUS POWER in this country.
