BREAKING: DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Survives Impeachment
PJ Media ^ | 02/06/2024 | Matt Margolis

Posted on 02/06/2024 4:45:46 PM PST by SeekAndFind

The House of Representatives failed to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday due to absences and defections.

There were some doubts about whether Republicans would have the votes to impeach Mayorkas. They could only afford to lose three votes, and Reps. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) had previously indicated that they intended to vote against impeachment. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was absent because he is undergoing cancer treatment.

The House vote was 214-216. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.) joined Buck and McClintock in voting with Democrats against the resolution.

House GOP Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) had expressed confidence that Republicans had the votes to impeach Mayorkas.

“We’re whipping Republican votes,” Emmer told CNN. “I’m confident we are going to pass it.”

The articles of impeachment accused Mayorkas of violating his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

"Throughout his tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas has repeatedly violated laws enacted by Congress regarding immigration and border security," the impeachment resolution read. "In large part because of his unlawful conduct, millions of aliens have illegally entered the United States on an annual basis with many unlawfully remaining in the United States. His refusal to obey the law is not only an offense against the separation of powers in the Constitution of the United States, it also threatens our national security and has had a dire impact on communities across the country."

That’s not why.

It’s because Mayorkas is not the one responsible.

Biden is.

Nobody else.

I totally agree, Tom used to be a voice of reason, with today’s vote and especially with the McCarthy ouster, he’s just another empty suit.

Time for Tom to go, he will not get re-elected in the very tough district the Dems have repeatedly drawn for him without support from MAGA.

The once mighty have fallen.

Bye Tom. Back to Thousand Oaks you go.

Why is it required to get 2/3 vote to pass?

According to Mike Gallagher's Wikipedia page:

Gallagher earned his B.A. in 2006 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. With a growing interest in global security, he changed his major from Spanish to Arabic.[2][7] Gallagher completed a 117-page senior thesis, "New Approaches to Asymmetric Threats in the Middle East: From Fighting to Winning", under the supervision of Frederick Hitz.[8] At this time he completed a summer internship abroad with the RAND Europe (UK) CIC[9] in Cambridge, United Kingdom, working on a strategic study of terrorist groups such as Basque separatists.

Gallagher served his first tour of duty in the Iraq War with the United States Marine Corps. Subsequently, Gallagher began a MSSI (Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence) at National Intelligence University and graduated in 2010.

Gallagher completed a second M.A. in security studies at Georgetown University in 2012. He then began doctoral studies, writing a dissertation on the administrations of Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Cold War,[10] receiving his Ph.D. in government and international relations in 2015.[11] His dissertation committee was chaired by Andy Bennett and included Keir A Lieber and Colin Dueck.[12]

Gallagher voted in line with President Donald Trump's position 93.8% of the time in the 115th Congress and 84.2% of the time in the 116th Congress,[20] but broke with the White House on issues such as the Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey and Trump's denial of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.[21] He voted against the majority of his party about 8.7% of the time.[22]

So Princeton and Georgetown, he wanted to keep Comey and believed the "Russia-Russia-Russia" bullcrap.

Swampie or Sleeper Democrat.

I read that a Repub changed his vote at the end in order to be able to introduce the bill when Scalese returns and their position will be better to PASS the thing.

Does anyone know who that congressperson is???

I did not catch the name.

It doesn't matter. Mayorkas took the oath of office and then violated that oath. It doesn't matter if he did it willfully or under orders, he must still be held accountable for his own actions.

The oath of office has to mean something.

At least this vote tended to separate the wheat from the chaff. I hope those who voted For Mayorkas will get their fill of him as I believe the majority in this country already has. He has been totally worthless as far I can determine & then trying to tell us that border is secure...that’s just too much.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I cannot believe there are people on here who think we should never put things to a vote unless we know we’ll win.
