A New Mexico police officer died after he was stabbed by a suspect who was shot and killed by a witness to the attack on Sunday evening, police said. Las Cruces Patrol Officer Jonah Hernandez was stabbed at least once shortly before 5 p.m. after responding to a report of a trespasser, the Las Cruces Police Department said in a statement posted on social media .

A witness to the attack used the officer's police radio to call for help after the stabbing, but Hernandez died after he was taken to MountainView Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, police said.

CBS affiliate KDBC-TV posted video of what appears to be first responders rushing Hernandez and the suspect to the hospital.

The suspect, a 29-year-old man, was believed to have been shot and killed by the witness, according to police, who did not release the suspect's identity pending notification of his next of kin.

Hernandez was a former resident of El Paso , Texas, who had served with the Las Cruces police for two years, the statement said. Hernandez is survived by a wife and two young sons.

The Las Cruces police said additional information will be shared later in the week.

Las Cruces is located about 223 miles south of Albuquerque , New Mexico, and 46 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas.

The number of law enforcement officers nationwide who died in the line of duty in 2023 decreased 39% compared to the previous year, according to data released last month by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Of the 136 officers who died in the line of duty last year, only one officer was fatally stabbed, the statistics showed.

There's times when knives can be more dangerous than guns. They're always loaded and don't go BANG when they're used.

Another reason why Gov Grisham deserves impeachment for thinking she was slick trying to make legal and responsible a mental health issue.

Even an “unarmed” suspect does not equal an “undangerous” suspect. Civilians are clueless as to what a lot of cops deal with daily.

I hope the bystander who shot the perpetrator, er alleged perpetrator, doesn’t get sent to jail for unlawfully discharging a firearm. It sucks that we should ever have to worry about such things, but liberals would say he shouldn’t have killed the suspect because the policeman was already dead.

What a confusingly written article. Especially the first paragraph.

How did he kill the suspect after he died?

The use of ‘before’ is very tricky, and the basis of some good jokes.

Obviously “common sense” knife control is the ticket.

Insert pic of UK knife drop box here.

Also, there’s the ‘good guy with a gun’ in the story.

You never know when you are going to be forced to kill someone.

Mythbusters once did a test to see if you could be stabbed before being shot. The knife won.

The Good Samaritan is probably lucky to be alive. He dispatched the killer and used the officer’s radio to call for help. When the responding officers arrived on the scene, it was probably chaotic and they didn’t know who was who. With an officer down, they were probably on hair trigger alert.

They even came up with a cutesy slogan, Save a life, turn in your knife. Just as effective at reducing crime as the time the Baltimore Bullets were renamed the Wizards when they moved to DC. 😖😖🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

There's times when knives can be more dangerous than guns.

Couldn't the witness just shoot the knife out of his hand? Why did he have to kill him instead of allowing him to get a fair trial? ...(asking for a Progressive "friend")

IIRC the Bullets had been in DC for quite a while when they changed their name to Wizards. This is what I got from wiki

The franchise was established in 1961 as the Chicago Packers in Chicago, Illinois; they were renamed the Chicago Zephyrs in the following season. In 1963, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and became the Baltimore Bullets, taking the name from a previous team of the same name. In 1973, the team moved to the Washington metropolitan area and changed its name first to the Capital Bullets, then the following season to Washington Bullets. In 1997, they rebranded themselves as the Wizards.
