Dems flip seat as Suozzi wins crucial special congressional election in New York to replace Republican George Santos

Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi has won a closely watched special election for a vacant House seat once held by former Republican Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from the chamber in December.

The Associated Press projected that Suozzi would defeat Republican county lawmaker Mazi Pilip, to win back his old job.

With the GOP hanging on to a razor-thin majority in the House, national Republicans and Democrats poured big bucks into a race in suburban New York City where immigration and border security, crime, and abortion were the top issues, and where the election was seen as a bellwether ahead of the all-but-certain November White House rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. The Long Island district held for a decade by Democrats was flipped by Santos in the 2022 midterms. But Santos was kicked out of Congress less than a year into his tenure, after he was exposed for lying about his background and indicted for a slew of financial crimes.

Suozzi, who represented the district for six years before running unsuccessfully for governor, repeatedly tied Pilip to Santos, as well as to former President Donald Trump.

"Who knows what she really stands for? She's George Santos 2.0. It's the exact same nontransparent, phony baloney, just trying to get votes instead of saying what you really think," Suozzi charged on the eve of the election.

And Suozzi, a former mayor and county executive, argued that Pilip - who is in her second term as a county lawmaker - "is a far-right wing extremist" who is "totally in line with Mike Johnson and Donald Trump ."

“OK. So mail in ballots, low Republican turnout?”

To what do you attribute those factors? Suozzi made the race all about Trump. Are Trump voters de-motivated?

“The cancer of the party is whoever is in charge of vetting and slating these flawed candidates.”

I think Pilip was an awesome candidate. Please identify her flaws.

The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found that almost two-thirds of suburban voters have an unfavorable opinion of Trump and, in a head-to-head matchup, Biden leads Trump by 16 points with suburban voters.

I know that the default setting is that any Republican that doesn’t show unswerving loyalty to President Trump isn’t really a Republican, but the naiveté would be to believe that a terrific candidate in the Oklahoma 3rd would be a great one in the New York 3rd.

You wrote: “The Long Island Republican machine is legendary.”

So I wondered if you knew those details (”factors”).

How many elections in a row is this that the Democrats have overperformed "the polls?"

The GOP is no longer made up of high propensity voters, but the Democrats damned sure are.

Sorry, that’s not going to register with many folks on the Internet.

Even if the poll methodology is valid, there’s a group of people that simply will not believe a poll they does not validate their belief or worldview. Some of it is ignorance, and for some it is low intellect- they simply don’t have the capability to understand.

There is a group of Republicans that also have tossed aside President Reagan’s big-tent philosophy and instead favor a less is more approach - that essentially the less people attracted to the Republican Party, the better the chance for Republican victories. Kari Lake is one of those advocates.

I’ve come to the realization that most Americans are blithering idiots, and we have the government we deserve.

The GOP is no longer made up of the high propensity voters who would come out during midterm elections, special elections, etc

And you are correct. It seems to have started around 2016. They either adapt or consign themselves to permanent minority status.

She seemed well-meaning an and had a very interesting life story.

I watched the debate and was not impressed with her as a candidate

It is so frustrating. Republican positions on immigration the economy resonate with the public.

But if the people articulating those ideas are personally repellent to huge blocs of the electorate, you're likely to see what we're witnessing now: everyone gets all excited about "the polls" and then wondes what the hell happened when the results roll in.

They only seem to show up if he is on the ballot.

Unfortunately every Democrat shows up when he is on the ballot

People forget (or never knew) that Ronald Reagan himself in ‘76 indicated he would pick Dick Schweiker, a moderate, as his running mate if he beat Gerald Ford for the nomination. He later picked him for his cabinet.

The current guiding philosophy seems to be addition by subtraction.

Republicans have ALWAYS been more reliable in off-year elections. That’s why they have outsized control of state legislatures.

Agreed. The odds of a GOP Senate majority are better than retaining the House.

And that's not saying much

Good point re: 1976.

The current guiding philosophy seems to be addition by subtraction.

Some believe it is a surefire path to victory. We shall see.
