Alexei Anatolievich Navalny (Russian: Алексей Анатольевич Навальный)
4 June 1976 – 16 February 2024, was a Russian opposition leader, lawyer, anti-corruption activist and a political prisoner.

He organized anti-government demonstrations and ran for office to advocate reforms against corruption in Russia, and against President Vladimir Putin and his government.

Navalny was a Russian Opposition Coordination Council member. He was the leader of the Russia of the Future party and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).

He was recognized by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience, and was awarded the Sakharov Prize for his work on human rights.

12 Americans die in prison every year

The number of state prisoner deaths stayed between 3,300 and 3,500 per year between 2008 and 2014, then steadily rose to 4,135, its highest level, in 2018. Combined U.S. prisoner deaths were 3,170 in 2001 and rose to 4,513, the highest number recorded, in 2018.
