In a third world country like the US it is hardly a surprise that math skills are plunging.
I didn’t know I was learning Russian math in Iowa 50 years ago.
In other words, for our low math scores to be considered a security threat I'm not worried about the average of math scores for all graduating kids. However, I would be concerned if we didn't have enough kids good at math to be as many future engineers, programmers, and accountants, etc. as we need.
Oregon students should not have to prove they can read, write or do math to get a diploma, lawmakers decide.

I do get a kick out of this. Afrocentric blacks and Arabs claim to have invented all maffs. But when the blacks are failing maffs suddenly maffs is racist because it is a white mans maffs.
In 1975 U.S. kids had the best educational system in the world. The educational wasteland the US now is began in 1979 with the advent of the Department of Education. As usual, DC ruined it.
Thanks to printed fiat money and massive debt, which means new money is issued to support favored members of the regime - pubic education has reached a state of “negative utility” - every extra dollar added actually makes it worse.
When my nephew graduated from NY, having been home-schooled his entire life, TPTB couldn’t believe he scored so high. He kicked ass.

Years ago I worked in a pizza emporium in New Haven CT.
A college student came in and ordered a 18-inch pizza to go. When the baker removed the pie from the oven and placed in into a box, he asked the student if he wanted the pie cut into six or eight pieces. The college student said after a short time, “Six pieces. I do not think I could eat eight pieces.”
None but the best and brightest get educated in New Haven CT.

Math is easy to teach. If Jack performs two sex acts each day for two weeks, how many sex acts did Jack perform by the end of day 12?
If you have 200 milligrams of fentanyl, and 2 milligrams will kill a person, how many people can you get high without killing more than 10.

This would explain much and yes, I agree, deficit spending is a national security threat.
They forget racism is also a national security threat. If math skills must be sacrificed on the altar of diversity. So be it.

About 3 years later, and the Oregon B$ re no math grades has spread across America.

I believe it has been shown having music classes as well as foreign language classes as part of the general curriculum does help with being able to grasp the language of math.
