US to airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza, Biden says
The Hill ^ | 03/01/2024 | BRETT SAMUELS

President Biden said Friday that the United States will begin airdrops of humanitarian aid into Gaza amid negotiations for a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Biden confirmed the planned airdrops during an Oval Office meeting with the prime minister of Italy. The effort will provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza as watchdogs and aid agencies have warned of increasingly dire circumstances there as Israel carries out military operations throughout the enclave.

The airdrops are seen as a way for the U.S. to get aid into the area while officials continue efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to allow for food, medicine, water and other supplies to get into Gaza, and for hostages to be released.

Providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Biden doing what Biden does best.

Just like in WWII when the USA dropped food, medicine and supplies to the Japanese in Okinawa and other besieged islands, and allowed them to regroup and rearm. Oh, wait, no we didn't! Wrong president, wrong time for liberal think.

“Meanwhile, Egypt is massing troops and hundreds of tanks on the Gaza border and engaging in provocative exercises.”

They are? I hadn’t heard that.

If they think they’re intimidating the Israelis, they’ve got another thing coming.

Dear god, utterly effing sick. IDF soldiers in combat, watching US cargo planes dropping supplies to the enemy.
Any USAF pilot ordered to take that flight should refuse.

How many will be killed fighting over it? Since Hamas is still the best armed, they'll kill to steal most of it and eat well while sending out press releases about the IDF shooting starving Arab civilians trying to get food.

My only hope is that the supply drifts badly over the Mediterranean and the only thing that can be retrieved is a supply of red berets (like in A Bridge Too Far).

You can turn this into a positive like was done yesterday. Announce the distribution of flour to try to relieve the starvation. When the civilians crawl out their holes to queue up for their flour, machine gun them! Sickening.

Those are not civilians. They were active supporters of Hamas in countless ways. They were silent about the tunnels they all knew about. They elected that Hamas government is a free election that was monitored. They celebrated and wept in joy in phone calls when their sons murdered and raped Jews and called home to brag. They cheered them as the murderers streamed back into Gaza. They hid, moved and abused hostages as Hamas moved them around.

Yeah, I support starving them until they walk out with their hands high. What kind of jackass drops supplies into a besieged area? You think dropping food behind Jap lines on Saipan woulda been a good idea? Into Berlin in March of 45? They were hungry too.

Eff em.

They’re doing it to keep the border well sealed, and prevent a breakout from Gaza. They don’t want the civilians, more relevant they already have a problem with terrorists in the Sinai, they don’t want them reinforced with Hamas escapees from Gaza. I don’t know, but I have to assume they’ve pretty much closed or monitor all the smuggling tunnels from Egypt to Gaza. It’s a pretty short border.

Same kind who flies over an active combat zone.

I approve of this instead of giving money to aid groups or the UN to make the arrangements. All that graft, overhead, self dealing etc when it is contracted out to groups and NGOs and the UN etc, little is left for true humanitarian aid. We can do it right (if this administration makes the effort to it right), buy the foods and distribute them directly - no middle men to steal cash with corrupt dealings. I want Israel to win this war, eradicate Hamas, and get a new technocratic government installed for the Palestinian self rule. I do not want kids to die of malnutrition and treatable diseases. We have plenty of food and this won’t cost a lot. After yesterday when the mob of people looted the aid trucks and many died in stampedes; and with UNRWA completely useless, there are no options left. Egypt and Qatar and Israel have all said airdrops are inideal and a last resort, but I think it’s at that point now. After yesterday nobody is going to be driving aid trucks into Gaza. So the world is at the last resort. Hopefully these airdrops are in 100s or 1000s of small loads spread out so that people get a chance and don’t have to fight off a mob; that every can and bottle and bag has a big American flag on it and says “courtesy of the American people” that the parachutes have the Stars and Stripes print on them.

Bernie is a nut job. Nobody wants to drive trucks into Gaza especially now after the stampede.

The IDF was expecting some activity from them, but not so huge - a surprise.

I’m not going to try to reason with a mind that can support such an atrocity.

Egypt has built a fairly large containment zone. Large, relative to the size of Gaza. It is all walled in or at least in process of being walled in. It’s like a buffer “no man’s land” right now. There are several theories as to why and they are not mutually exclusive. For one, they don’t want the Gaza population to spill over into Egypt or the Sinai whether that happens because of a breach at the border or mass exodus whatever the cause or reason. This also shuts off smuggling tunnels that may be running under the Rafa area border into Sinai. They could have it for various other contingencies. It could also be a staging ground for delivery of aid and not necessarily for today, but for the future. Gaza after Hamas will need external trade, and Egypt is the obvious natural partner.

There have been proposals floated over the many years to lease Sinai land to Gaza. It could also have something to do with that - a future industrial zone for Gaza based industries. Hamas has not exploited any of their natural resources, I argue because they haven’t t had to face the music - make peace and govern your society. They survive mainly on foreign aid. If they want a “state” they need to make peace and start various industries to support their people. I don’t think Egypt will give away land, but they could lease land to Gaza based industries or other industries that may wish to serve Gaza in some future. And that would also help Egypt over time.

Frankly I see it as Egypt being proactive and practical knowing Gaza will change. The tanks and reinforcements are not provocative to Israel - they are defensive for Egypt in preparation of whatever may come in the near or distant future.

These air food drop programs are usually for domestic political optics and not substantive. Either the stuff winds up on the black market or is tossed. I remember George Bush Jr, at the beginning of the war, having a 2 day food drop program in Afghanistan for political optics here. The funny thing is they air dropped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as if Afghans even knew what they were. They probably did not even have a value on the black market. lol

I think they recognize economic development spilling over to Egypt is a long way off. You’ll recall an industrial park on the northern Gaza border was forced to close and a proposed casino/hotel complex nixed. Not to mention the fate of existing infrastructure and agriculture. And then there’s the actions of palestinians working in Israel scouting for Hamas. It’ll probably be years before there’s any joint trust. And plenty for the Euros and US to rebuild in Gaza. I agree, the Egyptian military isn’t on the border about Israel. And the risk of escaped terrorists into the Sinai is a real one. Directed toward Egypt and Israel.
