I am finding more and more “mainstream” articles to be completely incomprehensible.

Thank a teacher.

I am assuming that the racist practice of diagramming sentences has been abandoned along with professors ignoring the “who, what, when, where” rule.

Diagramming sentences has mostly been done away with now for a few decades. Who, what, when, where, and how are still taught as questions to explore under the objectives of deeper learning, concept mastery, and critical thinking skills. These are also part of what is taught in writing at various levels in K12 education.
