The State of 'Shrinkflation': Why Biden called out skimpy bags of potato chips

During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden reached for one of his top recent peeves: shrinkflation.

"Too many corporations raise prices to pad the profits, charging more and more for less and less," Biden said. He complained about skimpier Snickers bars and added: "The snack companies think you won't notice if they change the size of the bag and put a hell of a lot fewer — same size bag — put fewer chips in it."

Less coffee in a can, more air in a bag of cereal, fewer sheets in a toilet-paper roll — shrinkflation lets higher prices hide in plain sight without instantly shocking shoppers. NPR's Planet Money dubbed it "inflation's devious cousin."

And inflating the dollar to the moon has nothing to do with it I suppose.

But I keep hearing no one has enough money to buy anything. I guess claims don’t match reality.

Higher fuel prices lead to higher food prices.

Prices go up and prices go down. Demand fluctuates.

But people have only so much to spend.

If a bunch of people suddenly decide they want more of X, demand for X rises, and the price of X goes up.

But simultaneously people buy less of Y, demand for Y decreases, and the price of Y goes down.

That’s the way markets work, except...

If the price of everything goes up, it’s not demand that’s driving it, it’s money supply.

If it wasn’t for shrinkflation the inflation rate would be a lot higher wouldn’t it?

Exactly right. Inflation is the GENERAL movement of all prices, not supply & demand fluctuations of specific products or services. They are different.

That stupid chomo should be thanking companies for hiding Biden caused inflation through “shrinkflation.”

Every company should go back to the old sizes with the real price and put a “Bidenflation approved” seal on the package.

What’s he so angry about? It’s HIS economy. He should be mad at himself.

I bought a box of Jimmy Dean Biscuit Sausage for the first time in many many years.

Tiny little biscuit sausage about the size of a large egg. They shrunk!

I shopped Friday and looked at a Roma Tomato, Non-Food Grade Petro Wax coated to make it fresh long. It went back into the bin. No reduction on FOOD PRICES either.
