My short story involves a college graduate student who works as an assistant to her professor maintaining bee colonies. She is also in love with a guy running the radio telescopes in Australia searching for alien messages. They hope to communicate with the aliens.

Meanwhile right there where she is every day, one of the bee societies has ordinary work disrupted by success and growth, necessitating a swarm. The bee powers that be must decide if and when to swarm and then where to go. It gets political.

Not knowing how to communicate with the bees, she misses out on a great biological democratic swarm event
