ROME — The Vatican Press Office said Saturday evening the pope’s call for Ukraine to raise the “white flag” did not refer to surrender but rather the “courage to negotiate.”
“I think that the strongest one is the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people and has the courage of the white flag, and negotiates,” Francis said during a recent interview with Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS), a portion of which was published Saturday morning.
The pontiff’s words were widely understood to refer to Ukraine’s surrender, drawing a fierce reaction from Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba.

comrade Frankie has been in and out of hospitals the last two weeks, ostensibly for bronchitis. He’s 87 years old
He may not have long remaining.
My question is - how many marxist Cardinals has he installed?
“A rose by any other name”
Fine, call it “the courage to negotiate” but just do it and shut down the rat money laundering op.
Oh, is kareem Shawn Pierre their spokesperson now?
“White Flag” sounds like surrender to me.
In other words the Vatican needs a better translator?
It would seem “olive branch” rather than “white flag” is what would have been said if “surrender” was not what was meant to be implied.
I guess the Pope said to "Raise The White Fags In Ukraine", now I get it!
Call it what they will, ENOUGH PEOPLE are dead, and nothing gained - how about ending this crap before it becomes a mass-extinction event?
The cardinals chose very poorly
Every public announcement released by the pope goes through a bureaucracy to get the language to assure that the message conveys the meaning the pope meant it to. Antipope Bergolio just told the Ukrainians to surrender.
The world is a lot different today from when the Pope could draw a line on a map and say what part of South America belongs to Portugal and what part belongs to Spain.
Supposedly, the lines separating one from another country today were set a long time ago. But, were they?
In the case of East Timor, a small Catholic country (formerly a Portuguese colony), a line got erased upon an invasion by Indonesia. Then, during a time of turmoil in Indonesia, the line got put back. In the case of East Timor, an identifiable people in an identifiable place eventually determined the outcome.
In the case of Ukraine, arguments could be made that its borders were arbitrarily set by Stalin for nefarious purposes. Stalin, it could be said, moved the Donbas region into Ukraine to increase Russian influence in that SSR. At the time, this was not a big deal because Ukraine was itself an SSR within the USSR.
Then, the people of this region became trapped inside Ukraine upon the shift of the country to the west. Indeed, in elections prior to 2014, Russian-speakers in eastern Ukraine voted very differently from Ukrainian-speakers in western Ukraine.
But, instead of negotiations - and perhaps a plebiscite under international supervision - we got a war. What else would you expect from Putin?
The Pope COULD HAVE spoken to the possibility of peaceful resolution of the Ukraine-Russia border, one that respected the desires of the people in eastern Ukraine, and also of water rights needed by Crimea whether an autonomous republic in either larger country. But, no, the Pope steered clear.
To my knowledge, only Elon Musk tried to approach this matter with fairness to the people involved.
A just resolution would allow the people in the Donbas and possibly other places to decide with which larger country they wanted to affiliate, with those in the minority able to relocate (perhaps with some assistance). Think of the partition of India. Better such a thing than war.
Once we get to a peaceful resolution, the healing process can begin. Except now, with these invasions combined with WWII and the starvation in Ukraine during the Great Soviet Famine prior to WWII, this process will take vary long time.
Ukraine could have been a link between the east and west in Europe. Instead, Russia will continue to evolve into Big North Korea.
Nope.
Don’t buy it.
White flag means *surrender*.
< Did they, though?
You mean they didn't have any idea who or what they were voting into office?
And there's no mechanism for removing him?
Give me a good Pope from Poland anytime.
The Pope has always been a communist.
Frank eff’d up and told the truth... kinda like saying “illegal” instead of “undocumented”
He should stay out of all world affairs of which he is sheltered from knowledge.

The Russians can end it anytime they want and go home. The Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom. Comfortably enjoying your own freedom, you should not deny the Ukrainians the right to preserve theirs.
Why the surprise. Pope Joke already surrendered to the devil.
