More than two years after the whole-scale invasion of Ukraine, is Russia still a near-peer threat to the United States? What are the capabilities of the Russian military after 24 months of heavy fighting against a determined Ukrainian military equipped with Western weapon systems? How soon can the Russian armed forces replenish the devastating losses they have been taking in the fighting? These are just some of the questions the U.S. Intelligence Community analyzes in its latest annual threat assessment.

Released every year in early spring, the annual threat assessment delves into the most acute threats to U.S. national security and projects how these issues will affect America.

The Russians spent their money wisely. On big ticket nuclear weapons in numbers to destroy the us and survive both a first strike and a first strike retaliation. They have “low tech” missile defense that would likely smack back a lot of what we had left. Plus, they can lose 97% of their people and be happy if they killed 60% of us. They don’t have level 4 helmets or MREs or armored hummers…boo hoo

Liberal wet dream—When we declare war on Russia, China will join us to take back Siberia for Peking. The Nations of Europe will unite in the invasion of Russia with a “Grand Army” to seize Moscow and St. Petersburg, topple Putin, and bring a German style democracy to that sorry land.
They never think that in a World War we might lose? Russia has been lining up allies in Africa and South America. China doesn’t see Russia as a threat—we are. A world war will help Biden and Democrats keep power (with War Powers ) but they do not realize a loss will bring Civil War and the end of the nation.

“Russia is losing.”

Are you serious? What are your sources for this?

Russia can’t even win a war on its own border...seriously. how an they not have complete air dominance on an I’ll equipped neighbor. That would be akin to us not being able to do so over British Columbia...

The desperate propaganda & disinformation campaign being waged on FR by various Ukraine-haters

Wouldn’t be needed if Russia was actually winning, would it?

Name one thing the US intelligence community has gotten right since Vietnam? Without Reagan we would still be fighting the Soviets.

Their list of failures is long and gruesome when you consider the death and carnage they inflicted or allowed to be inflicted on the US military and US citizens in general through their lies and incompetence.

At this point I would take anything the US intelligence community told me with a grain of salt. Trump absolutely has no reason to believe anything they utter in his presence. If elected he needs to have anything they want to inform him about be put in written form and never let into the White House, as they have shown they have no regard for the law and have tried endless coups against a sitting president.

Thirty-five years ago I could never have imagined myself making these statements and it still is heart rendering, but they have gone rogue and are not to be trusted or considered friends of the American people and that’s on them entirely.

The greatest threat to the United States as a nation comes from Davos, not Moscow.

“More or less stated” is imagination. It’s either stated or not stated, and if it’s not stated it’s imagination. This is not complex.

And so. Europe has nothing Russia wants. In fact, they have a great deal of various things Russia actively does not want. They add nothing to Russia’s standard of living. Oil and gas do that.

You are delusional. Putin wants the restoration of the USSR countries, nothing less.

Very big F-16 exercise in Romania to day, sort of coincidental to the Storm Shadow attack on Belbec

Don't forget about Alaska either...when Putin gives the signal the North American campaign begins! 🙃

Putin wants to go down in history as the Russian leader who restored the old Imperial 1914 borders. At least as close as he can get; likely too late to grab back Finland, Poland and the Baltic states. That will be work for some future pseudo-Czar. He will probably turn eastward after the Ukraine adventure and get the wandering Stan’s back into the family. The West won’t care, China might but not the West.

Actually we’ve been in DEEP kimchi for a very long time...but that silliness is a misdirection on your part. We are talking about the capabilities of the Russian military. They just added 1100km of essentially unprotected border with Finland. The Rooskies don’t have the manpower to effectively manage their current borders much less occupy Ukraine. They know it. We know it, and they know that we know it. Hell They couldn’t fight a successful war against Norway Sweden and Finland if the plan was to take the countries. They need twice the current capability to effectively guard their own borders now...another 600K troops to occupy all of Ukraine...and they simply don’t have the soldiers or hardware, much less the trained and capable fighting force ot logistical supply. Oh sure they. An kill lots of folks including their own but they are finished as a world power other than nuclear. If America engaged them they wouldn’t have a surface ship in either the Black or Blatic Sea in 72 hrs. Again, they know it...we know it and they know that we know it.

Says you! Put official numbers of what Russian military strength is with reliable academic and think tank resources.

I have lost all confidence in the CIA to provide any intelligence that isn’t seriously biased and flawed.

And they didn't warn us about the collapse of the Afghan Army during the Fall of Kabul. We did not even complete the withdrawal at this point. So what does that tell you?

Yes, but we played a role in their collapse. Before all of this debacle went down, Biden pulled all air support away from the Afghans, removed advisors, military supply taken away, etc. The Afghans had no warning. The Taliban had infiltrated the towns and when the time came military commanders and town mayors were offered large sums of money to not resist. (Probably our money) They were set up to fail.
