Communist Cuba is on the brink of collapse
Japan Times ^ | 3/20/24 | JUAN PABLO SPINETTO

Posted on 03/20/2024 11:10:02 AM PDT by EnderWiggin1970

Almost unnoticed amid the drama and crisis that hit Latin America every week, in the last days of February the Cuban government asked the United Nations for aid to address a growing food shortage. The unprecedented cry for help from a communist regime that has always prided itself on its social welfare model captures Cuba’s dire economic straits. Hurt by tightened U.S. restrictions, decaying domestic production, a weak post-COVID-19 tourism industry and indifference from its allies, the island is living through its worst economic days since the collapse of the Soviet Union more than three decades ago. A string of blackouts brought people into the streets last weekend, shouting for "food and power” — a rare display of social unrest since the turmoil that shook the island in July 2021, which the regime contained with crushing force.

Today’s economic situation is a huge challenge for the Communist Party of Cuba that has controlled the nation’s life since Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959. Witness the search for internal scapegoats and distractions: President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced an unusual investigation against an old ally and friend, Alejandro Gil Fernandez, for alleged corruption after firing him from the post of Economy Minister.

“Hurt by tightened U.S. restrictions . . .”

How so?

If they can't get cars from the U.S. can't they buy them from China?

Can't they get steel from China? And tractors? And computers?

And can't they buy oil from Iran?

Can't they buy food from Mexico? Mexico sells food to the U.S.?

How does U.S. refusal to trade stop communist countries from doing so?

Cuba wants normal trade relations with the U.S. and that means the U.S. would basically give them free stuff.

They don't get much stuff from other countries because other countries want to sell Cuba products, not give them products.

"Another Mariel boatlift."

If there is another "Mariel Boatlift", will the "Commies" be the first ones on the boat? Or, will they flee to another island, where they have been stashing cash or gold, leaving Cuban citizens to sink or swim on their own?

"We need Trump to control our borders.."

How about, Trump and some of his "Capitalist Buddies"; get the Cubans to throw out the commies; give Trump and his Capitalist Buddies, 100 year leases, too build "Hurricane proof" Resorts, World Class Golf Courses; Fine Resturants; turning Cuba back into the "Vacation Paradise" is was before the commies took over.

Imagine, Trump Tower Havana

Cuban flotilla Part Duex. Empty the prisons, add the most destitute and send them to the USA for JoeK to sign them up to vote and put them on permanent Gov. welfare.

An island in the middle of the ocean and you can’t find fish in the market.

How different it would have been if Hyman Roth had gotten his way

I would have transformed it into a great country 😊

Don’t worry, China will bail them out. At which point, thanks to Jimmy Carter, China will control both ends of the Caribbean.

My friend and neighbor is from Cuba, his father was tortured in Castro’s prisons for 15 years. He died shortly after being released.
My friend and neighbor is a Trump voter. He hates what he’s seeing transpire in the U.S.

“Communist Cuba is on the brink of collapse”

Be nice if Communist USA was in the same boat...about to collapse and be replaced by something better.

You anti Trumpers are ignorant and choose to stay that way. You’d go commie in your ignorance rather than educate yourself and save this nation.

Cuba has been on the brink of collapse since the 60s. I’m not holding my breath.

I often go to the National Weather Service web site as it has a great view of the Northern hemisphere of America. As it get night you can see the flicker of cities as the lights come on. The USA is well lit, Cuba, mostly dark, Haiti very dark, Puerto Rico, well lit.

Shock therapy was quite brutal but it worked in Russia for most part. They paid a price in the ‘90s. But they’ve adapted and pretty resilient today despite the sanctions from the West.

First and second generations of Cubans less so—and getting worse...
