‘Unaffordable’: California McDonald’s Franchisee Slams Gavin Newsom’s $20 Fast Food Minimum Wage Bill

A major California McDonald’s franchisee is speaking out against Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) new minimum wage law that will force fast food businesses to pay workers at least $20 per hour, saying menu items would become “unaffordable” if scaled to the increased wages.

Kerri Harper-Howie, a Los Angeles-based franchisee who owns 21 McDonald’s locations across the state with her sister, says her profits will tank while trying to keep up with the guidelines from the California Fast Food Council, which Newsom created in 2023.

I remember when McDonald’s food was decent.

McDonald's food is still completely decent. What isn't decent is Bdenomics and the resulting inflation, which has turned $3 Big Macs into something twice as expensive.

“But Gavin gave his Panera Bread-owing buddy a carve-out so he didn’t have to pay the $20 minimum wage at his Panera Bread Stores”

His buddy who has donated over 150k to Gavin the Scumbag campaigns claims he will not take the carveout, time will tell. Meanwhile California’s Assembly has a “cleanup” bill moving through Sacramento. Adding more carve outs is the cleanup. Basically Amusement parks, Airports, and Sports / Music venues won’t have to pay $20. There is a thread about this on FR that I believe was posted yesterday.

Yes, close them. Then the Gov can form a department of fast food management. Hire several hundred beaurocrats at $250,000/yr salaries.
Reopen the stores, hire workers at $35/hr + pension and unionize. Source the stores only with highest priced and union fed items.
Once doors open, slow and begrudging service only. Operate at huge losses, subsidize with tax hikes, and ensure no audits.
That is how to properly run a ‘business’.

…the Big Mac Index…..

When it was introduced, $5 bought 10 Big Macs. Now $5 buys one.

The Big Mac hasn’t changed…..

The currency is becoming worthless.

No - that ship has sailed

From the text of the bill AB 1228

(c) (1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), “fast food restaurant” means a limited-service restaurant in the state that is part of a national fast food chain.
(2) “Fast food restaurant” shall not include an establishment that on September 15, 2023, operates a bakery that produces for sale on the establishment’s premises bread, as defined under Part 136 of Subchapter B of Chapter I of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, so long as it continues to operate such a bakery. This exemption applies only where the establishment produces for sale bread as a stand-alone menu item, and does not apply if the bread is available for sale solely as part of another menu item.

Minimum wage in Seattle is now $19.97-hour for large corporate employers.

$17.25-hour for smaller employers.

In January 2025, all Seattle employers will pay the same minimum wage, probably over $20-hour.

I am a passionate supporter of automation, expert software, and capital investments, so, I actually see a high minimum wage as helpful, in the short term.

See if you can read between the lines and figure out which party she votes for, and then decide if you give a sh*t about her problems:

California set up the Fast Food Council. The council’s purposes would be to “establish sectorwide minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions,” including training and health and safety standards. Does that mean they can make laws? What could go wrong?

Newsom, as the majority of political hacks, know nothing about business and should stay out of it.

She doesn’t understand the plan. Bankrupt all McDonald’s and turn the buildings over to illegal aliens so that they will become America’s new middle class.

“All they have to do is bake one loaf a bread a day and offer it for sale at some crazy high price.”

Oh, they are one step ahead of you. The law contains a “before date” for selling bread. BTW no Dem can explain how this mysterous point got written into the law or by whom. Quite a puzzlement, really…

All businesses have Liability and Workeres Comp Insrance, both of those are rated on your EMPLOYEE’S Pay. If your payroll cost go up 20%, you can count on your Work Comp and Liability on going up the same percentage or More. That $20 an hour actually COSTS the business Owner $30-$40 an hour and more.

"But that's too confusing for us people who care about the workers! Don't you even care???" :)
