I recall growing up in NYC when John Vliet Lindsay was mayor. Around 1967 there was a murder in the subway, an event that had not occurred in 25 years. The Transit Police force was doubled! There was a police officer on every train and at every station.
I graduated high school in 1968. A girl in my class was horribly murdered on a subway station just before Christmas that year. The crime was never solved. The current situation would have been unthinkable at that time.

I rode Chicago “EL” system as a kid in early 50’s from south side to loop. Street cars to Riverview and Wrigley Lots of blacks. No problems. What happened?
