If I ever used any subway system I would wait with my back to the nearest wall.

Hanging out near the landing in order to be the first to board the train seems to be a dangerous choice these days.

Would you prefer Bernhard Goetz be standing next to you?

The people mover system at DFW airport is a good example of how to safely load / unload people on a train. The only access to the cars is thru doors that are the same width as the sliding doors in the train cars. When a train arrives both the train doors and the station doors open at the same time.

There is no way that someone can find themselves on the tracks either by accident or intent.

I grew up in NYC and took the subway everyday for decades, albeit when it was much, much safer. You grow comfortable and nonchalant. Things like this literally never ever happened back then.
