Looks like everything in Port of Baltimore is going to be stuck there for some time. Nothing going in or out of it if the bridge totally collapsed. That’s could be a big deal on the East Coast.

Yes, it does look that way.

In the map below, the Chesapeake Bay is on the right. Heading northwest toward Baltimore Harbor, the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695 bypass) is the first bridge encountered on the wide Patapsco River approach.

Baltimore-harbor-Mar26-2024

Location: I-695 outer-harbor crossing -- 1.6 miles of 4-lane bridge structure (185 feet vertical clearance, 8.7 miles of approach roadways)

Traffic Volume: 11.3 million vehicles

This outer crossing of the Baltimore Harbor opened in March 1977 as the final link in I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway). The 1.6 mile Key Bridge crosses over the Patapsco River where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the words of the Star Spangled Banner. This facility also includes the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. Including the bridge and approach roadways, the facility is approximately 10.9 miles in length.

If they have a COOP they could use Sparrows Point or something and still have a functioning port. It is just outside the bridge area. The channel will have to be cleared.
