New York City will give debit cards to migrant families for food and baby supplies.
The first cards will be distributed to families on Monday, sparking fear that the new program could lead to fraud or abuse as well as speculation that the city will be prioritizing migrants over current citizens. As many 180,000 migrants have arrived in the city over the last two years with 65,000 now in shelters.
“A family of four is expected to receive up to $350 per week under the program, which will last six weeks, city officials said. The program will begin with 10 families on Monday, expanding to about 115 families, or roughly 450 people, over the next week,” noted the New York Times.

A long time ago I worked in the county food stamp office. That was when they still gave you an authorization to purchase and you turned that into food stamps. No debit cards.
We had people that would come in the office and use their ATP to get the stamps and then when we’d get off work and head out the back door they’d be standing there trying to sell us their food stamps for 50%. I’d just shake my head and walk off.
My guess is something else got ‘defunded’ without taxpayer approval. They think it is their money.
It’s long been the practice in the hood to use Food Stamps as cash although they trade for less than the printed value.
Still Food Stamps and other freebies function as another form of currency.
