Well, they did say the ship was registered in China.

We remember the demonstrative “bridges to no where.”

Apparently Biden wants another one to add to the world’s largely socialist follies.

You’re supposed to pull past the stop line to make a left turn.

I routinely do that, and if there hasn’t been a gap in traffic for me to make a left turn before the light changes, well, I complete my left turn as traffic is stopping for the red, since I have the right of way to do so.

The people who wait safely behind the stop line while waiting for a gap in traffic are the ones I’d like to strangle.

“I wonder if this event was big enough that they rang the Lutine bell?”

You are right there. There is an endless number of possibilities to point fingers at on this one. The crew mentioned power issues right before they hit the bridge, and alarms did go off supposedly, but that always leads to improper maintenance by crews as the ship was not new and someone screwed the pooch. But that has been used many times before like with the Boeing aircraft losing a door in flight.

Other things like the helmsman falling asleep, or drugged, or even inexperience at the helm could be contributory by the pilots actually steering the ship at the time of the crash. Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship, called the Dali — confirmed the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while in control of one or more pilots, who are local specialists who help navigate vessels safely into ports. So you’ve got maintenance, part failures, and pilot error all in the mix.

Gonna be fairly easy for the NTSB to find someone to blame. In the meantime, the insurance companies involved are probably making deals already. Commerce never stops and hiding in a hole is normal.

......under normal circumstances (meaning the Democratic Party is not involved) a big ship like this would have to have it’s insurance certificate on file and up to date with the Port Authorities to even enter the port.

As to WHO the insurance company is, I read it yesterday but have forgotten. If I run across it today, I’ll forward it on to you.

It would seem to me that any tragedy of that sort or the bridge in Baltimore should be carefully looked at as to insurance payments or other means of settlement before the government offers to pay.

Suffer an injury and the very first questions when signing in for services (e.g. imaging) are about where in the world the incident took place, and what were the circumstances.

Because, you know... if you were in any way injured on the job, even in some tangential way, or at a place of business, or otherwise not on your own property... they've gotta know.

I wonder how much of the need to know is in accessing the risk factors for a battle between insurance companies and workers' comp, or whoever else might be in the potential payment pool.

The Republicans in congress should put forth a 'stand-alone' funding bill specifically for the bridge and nothing else and bring to a full vote on the floor. Instead; what is going to happen is that the dems will bring forth a bill for the bridge funding and a bunch of other spending that has nothing to do with rebuilding the bridge (including funding for ukraine). The Republicans will vote against it, giving the dems and their hand-maidens in the media the chance to amplify the message that the Republicans "voted against" rebuilding the bridge because "they hate baltimore, black people, etc."

The Republicans need to get ahead of this, but they won't.

Also; needless to say, the name of the bridge will be changed to that of a person "of color". Anyone who votes against that will be deemed "racist".

They’ll pass a bill to get it fixed, but will add on all kinds of pork, and will say that anyone voting against it is heartless.

“No, it will be my grandkids paying for the new bridge.”

Who knows? Maybe Pete Buttjab will say he wants to reduce carbon emissions by not rebuilding that “RACIST!!” bridge after all.

How about the owners of the bridge who failed to bolster the piers to account for ever larger ships?

Interesting that Angela Chao’s company owns that ship and she just happened to accidentally kill herself in a pond a few weeks ago. 🤔

Point of comparison:

The eastern part of the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge (from Buena Vista Island to Oakland) was damaged in a 1989 earthquake and judged to be needing replacement.

The replacement was finally opened in 2013. You do the math. During that time there were five different CA governors

Deukmejian 1983-1991
Wilson 1991-1999
Davis 1999-2003
Schwarzenegger 2003-2011
Brown 2011-2019

There was a 700% cost overrun. The replacement bridge has defects in design, construction and materials that will me it a forever maintenance headache.

Good luck Baltimore.

Here you go:

“Depending on the length of the blockage and the nature of the business interruption coverage for the Port of Baltimore, insured losses could total between $2 billion and $4 billion,” said Marcos Alvarez, managing director for global insurance ratings at Morningstar DBRS. That would surpass the record insured losses of the Costa Concordia luxury cruise liner disaster in 2012, he said.

Mathilde Jakobsen, senior director, analytics at insurance ratings agency AM Best, also said the claims would likely run into “billions of dollars”.

Ship liability insurance, which covers marine environmental damage and injury, is provided through protection and indemnity insurers known as P&I Clubs.

The International Group of P&I Clubs collectively insures approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage and member P&I clubs mutually reinsure each other by sharing claims above $10 million. The IG Group declined to comment.

According to AM Best, the group holds general excess of loss reinsurance cover up to the value of $3.1 billion.

Baltimore, black minority city. Insurers, shipping company state and municipality funding should be on the hoof. Biden is in a rush to have the Federal taxpayers foot the full bill because that’s what identity politics folks do in attracting that particular group’s vote. No surprise here
