Electric vehicles release more toxic emissions, are worse for the environment than gas-powered cars: study

Electric vehicles release more toxic particles into the atmosphere and are worse for the environment than their gas-powered counterparts, according to a resurfaced study.

The study, published by emissions data firm Emission Analytics, was released in 2022 but has attracted a wave of attention this week after being cited in a Wall Street Journal op-ed Sunday.

It found that brakes and tires on EVs release 1,850 times more particle pollution compared to modern tailpipes, which have “efficient” exhaust filters, bringing gas-powered vehicles’ emissions to new lows.

Today, most vehicle-related pollution comes from tire wear.

As heavy cars drive on light-duty tires — most often made with synthetic rubber made from crude oil and other fillers and additives — they deteriorate and release harmful chemicals into the air, according to Emission Analytics.

Because EVs are on average 30% heavier, brakes and tires on the battery-powered cars wear out faster than on standard cars.

Emission Analytics found that tire wear emissions on half a metric tonne of battery weight in an EV are more than 400 times as great as direct exhaust particulate emissions.

For reference, half a metric tonne is equivalent to roughly 1,100 pounds.

The most popular EV in the US, Tesla’s Model Y, boasts a lithium-ion battery that weighs in at a hefty 1,836 pounds.

Another sought-after electric model, Ford’s F-150 Lightning pickup truck, also has an approximately 1,800-pound battery.

The study throws doubt on the practicality of the Biden administration’s EV mandates, which tout electric cars as “zero-emissions vehicles” in a quest to force two-thirds of new cars in America to be all-electric by the year 2032.

Not sure why you are arguing this point.

Two cars:
Gas 4 door- <-— Better than EV
EV 4 door- <-— Put out more pollution.

These are the facts, why you think we should BAN anything is kind of weird. No banning just facts, no need to go for banning stuff. Its just good to know the truth? Right?

This article has been buried since 2022- Maybe we should be curious as to why this article is JUST NOW coming out.

“Another sought-after electric model, Ford’s F-150 Lightning...”

Keep up prestitutes.

Ford “temporarily” stops shipping 2024 F-150 Lightning.

Not sure why you are arguing this point.

Because it is ridiculous. That's like arguing guns should be banned because they pollute the air when fired. The so-called pollution from guns is tiny when contrasted against discharges into the atmosphere from factories and aircraft. It is not a battle that needs to be fought.

There are many haters of EVs, and they're throwing everything negative against the wall hoping it sticks and will make them go away. Same as what liberal Democrats are doing to Trump.

The truth is that moving freight on roads causes much of the tire pollution. Did you know that ICE vehicles create a lot of pollution on roads from the wear on brakes? Not much pollution from EV use of brakes, because they use regenerative charging instead of grinding brake calipers and pads in order to slow the vehicle. Yet you don't see this factored into so-called "facts" in comparison between ICE and EV pollution.

The argument about tires on ICE and EVs is ridiculous. What I've always said, is that ICE vehicles will be around a long time, perhaps forever, and EVs will not penetrate more than 40 percent of the market. And that is not because of tires, but mainly due to horsepower, range, and electrical supply reasons. I much prefer long distance hauling with my ICE truck, same as most people.

Electric supply is the elephant in the room.

I have seen zero evidence of any serious effort to increase regional or national electric supply.

Since it can take a decade or longer to add major new supply that makes this a deal killer for decades to come.
