When in doubt, blame businesses for closing their doors instead of the crime that has made it unsustainable for them to operate. San Francisco might even do you one better: force the businesses to stay open anyway.
One of the 11 members of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors is floating reviving a vetoed 1984 law that would force grocery stores to stay open against their will. Supervisor Dean Preston calls it a “good idea” because of the risk of “food insecurity” that comes with grocery stores closing.
The law in question would require stores to give a whopping six-month notice before closing, would force them to meet with community members (i.e. activists who will shame them for being greedy corporations), and would mandate that they “explore” opening a replacement store to make up for the one they are closing. In other words, San Francisco would be forcing grocery stores to stay open while running at a loss and putting their own employees in danger due to crime, all because San Francisco just can’t stomach locking up the criminals causing these problems in the first place.
On the bright side, this may just be a worse idea than Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson proposing government-run grocery stores, moving San Francisco closer to the title of worst-run city in the country. But this is not a solution to the problem. The problem is that crime has made running several businesses unsustainable, whether through the losses that come with rampant shoplifting, the safety of employees being put in jeopardy, or both.
Forcing grocery stores to become charities for six months while a bunch of activists complain is not going to stop stores from closing. In fact, it would make them far more hesitant to open new locations (or the alternative ones the law mandates they consider), knowing that they could be held hostage by the city government for six months if their business becomes unsustainable.
If San Francisco pursues this, it would simply be a punishment levied against businesses that are only responding to the terrible circumstances they have been put in by criminals and by San Francisco’s lax attitude toward them. Forcing grocery stores to stay open temporarily doesn’t actually solve any problems, because it isn’t designed to solve a real problem.
Will the city bear responsibilty for damages, personal and material, should crime happen during the mandated open period?
If all the employees quit, that would solve the problem, too.
At that point, open the doors, let it be stripped clean and then don’t reorder anything else.
Load your shelves with Ramyun and Kimchi only until you can shut ‘er down.
There is the “Takings” clause in the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution.

The peoples Republic of California is out of control. And Gavin Newsom wants to be our president. Hell no, we need to succeed from the United States if he ever becomes president.
Let the members of the Board of Supervisors pony up the money and open their own grocery stores.
Ah, yes, the California Franchise Tax Board. They tried to collect income taxes on people living out of state who were receiving pensions from when they lived in California. SCOTUS struck this effort down.
Oddly enough, most of the denizens of "food deserts" I see are morbidly obese.

We fled California 15 years ago to Texas. California born and raised for 50 years. Southern Cal.
We saw all of this coming and there’s no going back. There is no hope, no future, nothing but an eventual narco state similar to Mexico. No law and order, people just seeing things and taking them. Taking over homes, possessions, it will be a free for all.
California is on the road to Perdition. Personally, I believe God has turned them over. He’s done to nations and people before. Those who mock him and his laws.
California is going to be a very unsafe place to be soon. My advice....get out while you can and don’t look back.

Here is a fun grocery store story.
For a time, I was the 3pm - 12 midnight swing shift supervisor at a large grocery store. From about 7pm on, all the higher ups had gone home, so then I was in charge.
We all know the large end of the isle displays with specials. The main boss would write out what he wanted on the end displays. Here is an example. Charcoal briquettes are on sale, so you stack up a lot of briquettes. You then place around the item something that is NOT on special, but has something to do with the special item. So, I placed barbecue liter fluid around the briquettes. The fluid was regular price, but some people purchased it.
Here comes the fun part. One of the new specials was toilet paper. Toilet paper end displays are a piece of cake, you just cut open the boxes and stack them up. So........what do you think I placed around the stacks of toilet paper, something that would be ‘related’ to the special.......yes.....I placed stacks off Del Monte Prune Juice around the toilet paper. My coworkers were either laughing or stating ‘you can’t do that!’ but since all the others bosses had left.....
The next day the main boss called me up to his office. He was laughing and laughing, while at the same time saying ‘how the #@&# could you do that?’. I pointed out that almost half of the Prune Juice was gone, sold.
Are they going to force them into not going out of business?
I’m waiting to see what the voters in SF do about their crime problem, and other problems.
