Pro-life conservatives are 'disappointed' in Trump's new abortion policy, but stick by him: 'only one option'

Conservative groups backing former president Donald Trump in his re-election bid say they are "deeply disappointed" with his official position on abortion unveiled Monday, but it won't deter their support in November.

The former president and presumptive GOP nominee in a video posted on Truth Social Monday morning said he cemented his position on the controversial issue, saying that abortion access should be a states’ issue and didn’t endorse a national, federal limitation – like a 15-week ban.

Pro-life interest groups who have endorsed Trump expressed disappointment at his announcement, but it appears unlikely to sway their support in consideration of Trump’s overall stance compared to Biden’s extreme abortion policy.

"The reality of a stark choice between President Biden who supports abortion: any number, any reason, up until birth, all paid for by the taxpayer and President Trump: who gave us three Constitutionalist justices, 220 lower court judges, appointees who support life and the overturn of Roe v. Wade has my endorsement and support in November for President," said Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), who said she "favors federal limits on abortion."

I thought Trump criticized the 6-week ban last year, and said it was too short.

Nonsense. I do not support abortion, but the Constitution makes no mention of that, and therefore it really becomes a state’s issue. If a state legalizes it then I can vote with my feet regardless of the cost to me.

You obviously did not read the article. There were several major pro-life leaders named.

-Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America (CWA), who said she “favors federal limits on abortion.”

-Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said while they are “deeply disappointed” in Trump’s position, the group will “work tirelessly to defeat President Biden and extreme congressional Democrats.”

-Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life, said “there remains an urgent need to advocate for the unborn at the federal level.”

-Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote, said that “while federal legislation on abortion policy is challenging at present, we are confident that a Trump administration will be staffed with pro-life personnel committed to pro-life policies, including conscience rights, limits on taxpayer funding of abortion, and protections for pro-life states.”

You are delusional. Trump took the best possible stand he could have taken and all these establishment elites, such as yourself, are bucking for failure and destruction. Thank God he was wise enough to say what he said

The Supreme court ruled it to be a state choice so any federal laws would be unconstitutional anyway. Smart move IMO.

He's demoralizing millions of pro-life Americans by refusing to take a stand.

He's being pragmatic. Abortion is probably the biggest driver of "single issue voters" in the US. Unfortunately, the issue drives more pro-abortion voters than anti-abortion, and would bring out millions of women who cherish the right to kill their babies. Likely enough to sway the election. And that could cost us both the legislative and executive branches.

What policy does Trump want in Florida? He won’t say.

Trump has no GOPE advisors and his position is the proper one to take. Abortion is a state issue, thanks to Trump, and the Founders intended it to be that way.

I don’t think it’s possible to pass on a national level considering the opposition but there may be other ways in the future. The rights of the unborn need to be secured as *human beings* and the protections granted.

If you’re saying that America is a godless majority then what even is the point of trying to run for election? Should just give up if you can’t say the truth at any point in time.

In the two party contest, Trump is the best but on the life issue, he is weak sauce and everyone knows it.

You shouldn’t let the media control you and believe everything they say.

Trump refused to say where he would draw the line. That is either cowardice or he agrees with the pro aborts

If Trump was running for a state office he should be expected to state his abortion position. But since the Presidency isn't a state office, his abortion position of leaving it to the states is the correct position.

In fact, that's the correct position on half of our political arguments. The federal government has way more power than the Constitution assigns to it.

Stop! He did the best possible.
Grow up!

It’s the states decision, NOT YOURS!

Trump did the right thing and more than ANY OF YOU DID in 50 years!

Trump was the only Republican since Roe to put judges on courts to overturn it. That is all a President can do.

I'm sure if there was the will in Congress to get a 15-week abortion ban passed, he'd sign it.

But, overturning Roe and letting the states decide the issue was absolutely the best that pro-lifers could do at the Federal level.

I agree that abortion is a state issue. But Trump won’t say his own moral viewpoint. What does he want for Florida? There were leaks saying he supported a 16 week ban, but he didn’t say that publicly to my knowledge.

The president needs to provide moral leadership even as he rightfully acknowledges it’s a state issue.

Ronald Reagan said abortion should be made illegal in each state.
