Mike Pence: Donald Trump’s Abortion Stance Is a ‘Slap in the Face’

Former Vice President Mike Pence slammed former President Donald Trump’s position on a national abortion ban as a “slap in the face.”

Pence issued a statement on X, criticizing Trump’s announcement that he did not support a federal ban on abortion.

“President Trump’s retreat on the Right to Life is a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” Pence wrote in his statement:

By nominating and standing by the confirmation of conservative justices, the Trump-Pence Administration helped send Roe v. Wade to the ash heap of history where it belongs and gave the pro-life movement the opportunity to compassionately support women and unborn children.

“But today, too many Republican politicians are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life,” Pence continued. “However much our Republican nominee or other candidates seek to marginalize the cause of life, I know pro-life Americans will never relent until we see the sanctity of life restored to the center of American law in every state in this country.”

Pence’s statement came hours after Trump announced in a video posted to Truth Social on Monday that the decision of abortion would be left up to the states to “determine by vote or legislation.”

There is a huge number of people who believe abortion is not murder. There is another set of people who believe it does not affect them if a mother kills her child. There is another set of people who believe it is ok to kill a baby if it is “flawed” (incest, rape, genetic). There is a final set of people who believe pro lifers want to ban abortion even if the pregnancy threatens a mothers life which is generally a straw man argument but a powerful one.

Rather than fight to elect people who think abortion pills should come from vending machines Pence should take victories that are possible and work on changing hearts and minds.

Pence apparently has never actually read the Constitution.

Amendment X (1791)
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

He gets it. I appreciate the, “I don’t expect Trump to do my job” line. A strategy from Trump and his campaign is taking shape. Abortion is not a federal issue, we aren’t going to touch social security and medicare. The election isn’t about those things at all. The election is about the border, inflation and integrity. Now let’s talk.

"His policy is actually conservative on this issue."

Like Lindsey Graham, Pence is actually campaigning for the pro-death party while wrapping himself in the appearance of virtue.

Pence makes a big show of his "pro-life" badge, no matter how many children it kills.

Trump’s position is a slap in the face at no one. It is 100% in line with Justice Alito’s position - the federal Constitution provides no federal power to regulate abortion.

If the right to life movement or the pro-abortion movement want to mandate something about abortion in the Constitution, they are welcome to push for an amendment to the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Trump is right; it is up democracy in the states to adopt abortion laws that suit the will of the people in each state.

President to be Trump, defends the line that needs defended. Let each individual State decide for itself. The problem that Roe V Wade always had, was it imposed on the entire nation in a dictatorial fashion, the mores of people they can never meet or know.

I thought Pence understood the Constitution and our federal system of government. The federal government only has the powers the state gave it when they created it. Everything else remains with the states. Where would the feds get the power to regulate abortions, Mike?

Are you stupid?

To pass a national ban - after 50 years of working to overturn Roe v Wade to send the issue back to the states - would be the biggest bait and switch in history. A national ban would be as illegitimate as the “constitutional right” claimed under Roe.

Why does he feel he has to speak out about everything President Trump says? He’s a miserable whiner at this point.

I was listening to Ben Shapiro’s take on Trump’s abortion decision. This is a moral quagmire for us pro lifers. If Trump takes a high ground moral position on abortion, then immoral portions of this country will throw out the republicans and elect only pro death democrats, thus enabling more human life destruction. By nuancing the issue and casting it to the states more unborn humans will be saved. Our job as pro lifers is to educate educate educate about what the wholesale murder of unborn human life is like.

Pence needs to read the 10th Amendment. The Constitution does not delegate the power to regulate abortion to the federal government, so that power is reserved to the states. But Pence is free to campaign against abortion state-by-state, as the Constitution allows. He should concentrate on that rather than on picking fights with Trump.

Big difference between the law the first time governor signed in 1967 that he soon learned was being abused and misused and regretted, versus where the pro-life movement and abortion knowledge and awareness is 57 years later.
