Sports writer Jemele Hill spoke out against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opting not to endorse any candidate ahead of the 2024 elections, calling it “political cowardice.”
Johnson had endorsed then-candidate Joe Biden prior to the 2020 presidential election, explaining in a recent interview that he felt it was his job to use his influence as a celebrity to endorse Biden. The actor and wrestler then added that he does not plan to endorse anyone in the November elections, a move Hill called “the most statement non-statement I’ve ever heard.”
“And that’s the kind of, frankly, political cowardice that’s hard to respect,” Hill said on The Dan Le Batard Show. “I don’t understand how Joe Biden is the divisive one when what he’s running against is pushing bigotry, xenophobia, every other phobia and ‘ism’ you could possibly name. That is what they’re literally campaigning on.”
Hill added that Johnson should not have issued a statement on the elections that would make him appear to align with “the side that is only pushing division.” She went on to say that side has no policy beyond getting people to hate others.
In an appearance last week on Fox and Friends First, Johnson also revealed that he was not happy with the state of the United States. However, he said he is optimistic that things would get better for the country, as he is “an optimistic guy.”
Last year, Johnson said a political party approached him to ask that he run for president in 2024. While the former wrestler said he was honored to have the opportunity, he said, “That’s never been my goal.”
Johnson is not the only celebrity to announce that he will not endorse any candidate in 2024, as rapper Cardi B announced last November that she would not provide an endorsement. Like Johnson, she had endorsed Biden in the 2020 election against former President Donald Trump, who is running for president again this year.
