Sailors are horrible with firearms. I used to watch quals on the fantail for the hilarity.

Once I was at the qual firing range; had finished shooting and a couple of us were helping a squad member assigned to loading magazines out of boredom.
The group noticed that when some people passed I was turning and facing in various directions so they asked what I was doing.
\/\/ayne: "Well, some people in our battery I don't trust with a loaded weapon so I won't turn my back to them when they have one."
"Why?" they asked.
\/\/ayne: "Some because of stupidity, others I suspect of being evil."
This led to the group guessing why I avoided having my back to particular unit members, shouting "Evil!" or "Stupid!" in unison when I would turn as someone passed.

If things in war get so bad the sailors must use sidearms instead of the naval guns...

That’s because they don’t or at least didn’t trust us with them. The closest I got to a firearm in the Navy was to look at a 1911 in boot camp. On the one occasion that someone was issued a firearm was on a detachment to Roosevelt Rhodes PR. We had to help provide perimeter security for the base and on of my squadron mates was issued an M-16 and he thought he heard something in the brush and took a shot. Resulted in an investigation, but no punishment for the sailor.
The Navy didn’t trust me with a firearm but did allow me to load nuclear weapons. 🤣😂🤣
