Trump is wrong: abortion opponents are looking for a national leader
Fox News ^ | April 9, 2024 | Marjorie Dannenfelser (SBA President)

Posted on 04/10/2024 6:43:05 PM PDT by Reno89519

By forming the Supreme Court majority that would finally reverse Roe v. Wade and restore the right of the people and their elected representatives to protect unborn children and their mothers in the law, President Trump can truly be called the most consequential pro-life president in history.

...

Since the 2022 midterms, however, a narrative has taken hold that the life issue costs Republicans elections and is better left to the states, anyway – a narrative that threatens this great accomplishment. With policy platforms suddenly having very real consequences, many candidates became fearful, listened to consultants and opted for the "ostrich strategy" of burying their heads in the sand. These candidates fared badly.

...

Now, in the midst of the 2024 campaign, President Trump's long-awaited announcement of his stance tragically pigeonholes abortion as a matter of states’ rights. It has met with disappointment from the pro-life community and the millions of Americans who are looking for a national leader who can build consensus and stand up to the pro-abortion extremism of Joe Biden and congressional Democrats.

It would be a disaster to cede a winnable fight to Biden and the radically pro-abortion Democrats, who unapologetically push their extreme agenda on every American. We can’t quit working to defeat them in the battleground states that will decide control of the White House and Congress, and the SBA Pro-Life America team remains focused on reaching 10 million voters – four million at their doors. As always, the key to changing hearts, minds and votes is contrast with the Democrat Party position of abortion any time for any reason.

...

... President Trump and the GOP should embrace and fight for this consensus – not abandon the fight nationally. Embracing this position is both smart policy and smart politics.

I don’t know the process the federal government can use to build an abortion facility as a federal owned building.

Don’t you think we risk loss pushing pro-life, just as much as if we acquiesce and let the pro-abortion people run amok? I fear we lose with both, which is what the essay points out. But what is the middle ground? And can Republicans credibly claim it?

I wonder what Trump’s position would be if a state (CA, most likely) legalized abortion up to the moment of birth.

Trump did in 2016, even in 2020, not so much today.

“Seeking a “consensus” on outlawing abortion is the seeking of the impossible. Trump’s position is the only constitutionally defensible one which also has a chance at least to dissipate some of the heat. If you want to follow Lindsay Graham and demand a“national ban,” fine, but be ready to welcome Biden, or whatever other democrat, into the White House next January, and total defeat for the unborn..”

BINGO

Listen to Ben Shapiro’s podcast today. He outlines the proper position in a way I fully agree with.

I agree with that. I just wish he would fight Democrats as hard as he does Republicans.

It is only common sense. If we don’t win the House, Senate and Presidency, abortion until birth will be the rule of the land.Trump knows this and that is why he came out with his opinion. The majority of the country believes that abortion should be legal. Unfortunately, that is reality. We must win and keep educating people how wrong abortion is.

Trump not perfect but not a RINO.

He said last week he isn't a conservative. I don't think he's a RINO, just don't think he's a Republican.

Opens the door for something better.

What better? Whenever he stops running, the GOP is dead. If he wins in 2024, unless the 22nd Amendment is repealed, the GOP will not even mount a serious challenge to the Dems in 2028.

Abortion is state issue and it, like almost all criminal acts, were meant to be.

Overturning Roe was ALL that could be done that Federal level. Anyone suggested Trump should push the issue is trying to undermine him and is helping Biden.

No one is justifying it. But, there has to be political will to outlaw it and there only is at state level in certain states.

Pro-lifers were given the opportunity to outlaw at the state level by Trump. It's time take advantage of that and put the work in at the state level.

Making it a Federal issue does far more harm than good.

So Trump should side with the Democrats? Will that win him and Republicans the election? I think the lack of leadership will simply nullify them, leaving pro-choice folks the winning hand, especially in states where abortion is on the ballot, which appears to be quite a few and likely more.

The absolute hypocrisy on the right is that conservatives are supposed to believe in limited government so when Roe v. Wade was overturned and sent back to the individual states to deal with then that’s what we should’ve all wanted , deal with it at the state level …

You can find plenty of hypocrisy right from Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA. She was thrilled when the Dodd decision was announced in 2022, and even pointed out that her organization’s work was just getting started — as they prepared to fight the pro-life battle in 50 states and the District of Columbia.

She is singing a completely different tune now, and I have a strong suspicion about what that’s the case. She and her fellow pro-life advocates have been getting their asses kicked every time the issue comes up at the state level since 2022 … and they’re now looking to make abortion a national issue because they’re too cheap, lazy or weak to fight 51 battles.

Abortion is state issue and it, like almost all criminal acts, were meant to be.

That’s exactly right, and it’s a point everyone involved in the pro-life movement should recognize. I want some of these spokespeople in the pro-life movement to explain to me with a straight face how it makes any sense for abortion to be a Federal crime while the murder of a random child on the street is not.

You cannot force every woman in the US to not have an abortion any more than you can force them to accept Jesus. Some situations and decisions are privately made. We will lose this election unless we realize this. Are you going to have your choice of having a gun taken away just so no one gets shot?

How is siding with Democrats? Democrats want to legalize abortion until birth at taxpayer expense at the Federal level.

Trump believes states should decide the issue and opposes taxpayer-funded abortion.

There couldn't be a bigger contrast between what the Democrats want and Trump's position.

The issue with abortion is who pays for it and where?

Or that it’s murder or healthcare?

Both the pro-abortion and pro-life lobbies have the pitchforks out for Trump. Splitting the baby isn’t satisfying either. Pro-lifers demanded overturning Roe v Wade, returning the issue to the states, but now they want fedzilla to take it back?
