The boat reportedly lost power briefly before veering one of the bridge's support, sending the bridge cascading into the water below. Six lives were lost.
On Monday, federal agents boarded the crashed boat to conduct a search. Agents wore yellow and orange life jackets as they boarded the Dali, standing where it had been since the crash. The FBI confirmed that it had agents on the ship conducting the investigation.

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd. and is under the management of the Singaporean company Synergy Marine Group. Maersk was in charge of chartering the ship at the time of the incident.
Leading up to the event, Maersk halted all shipments in the Red Sea channel in December 2023. The cargo ship was headed to Sri Lanka from Baltimore.

Everything on or around the engine of one of those ships is electrically powered. The fuel pump, the water pump, the oil pump are all electric. It takes compressed air to start one and the compressors are electric. Even the engine valve train is hydraulically operated and the hydraulic pressure comes from an electric pump. Lose the generator and the engine stops.
The engines on these ships are usually connected directly to the main shaft. So to reverse directions they have to stop the engine (and the propeller), then restart it rotating backwards. Not a quick procedure.
The rudders on these ships are small relative to the size of the ship and have little effect without a propeller pushing water across them. The bow thruster has no effect at speeds above three knots (Dali was doing 8 knots), and bow thrusters take electricity to operate anyway.
This ship probably has four generators, but to me electric power still looks like an amazingly risky single point of failure and I'm surprised there aren't more accidents like this.
When the FBI investigates, you know they need an official finding for the coverup.

From experience I note that the blanket of silence of a “criminal investigation” is used to keep the spotlight off any politician who may feel embarrassed or called to task for something not criminal at all. “cannot tell you that” or “the investigators are looking into that now so no comment” or “I called in the FBI to look into it which they are doing”.
