On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher predicted that this year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago will be a repeat of the chaotic 1968 Democratic National Convention, which was also held in Chicago, because there will be large numbers of protesters whose “new cause” is “Hamas, to be on their side.”
Maher said, “I was twelve years old, when they had it in 1968 in Chicago. It was like my baptism into politics, like, wow, this is kind of interesting shit going on on TV, and I know this is politics — but because there [were] hippies in the streets and the cops were beating the shit out of them, it was really quite dramatic. And it’s going to happen again, because the kids, they’re going to be out there in force chanting about Genocide Joe, because this is their new cause now. This, they think, is the cause of their lifetime, Hamas, to be on their side. So, I’m just wondering how the Democrats are going to come out of that convention. Because I remember the last time that happened in Chicago, they got bloodied by it, and Nixon won the White House.”

1968 was an exciting year.
One journalist of the time was quoted in a history documentary saying “All of us reporting then remember that as the most exciting year in our careers despite of course the assassinations and bloodshed. Action and suspense about what was going to happen on each new day.”
Will the Chicago mayor say “the police aren’t there to create disorder, they are there to preserve disorder”.
In 68, Daley was mayor.
He used the Chicago police force to go in swinging buttons.

I don’t read all his recent stuff like this and on wokeness as anything other than his warning to leftists to shut up on the stupid stuff until after the election.
He is a progressive that wants our country to be run by unelected elites. He’s just telling the elites to cool it for a bit and rein in their stupider colleagues for a bit. Someone stopped the BLM/Antifa riots in their tracks when they started polling wrong for Biden. He’s asking that same someone to do the same for the D crackpots.

A noble thought, to be sure. But try to keep things in balance. You don’t want the locals to win too early. And you don’t want the Hamas crowd to win too early.
The ideal would be if they fought it out until the snow falls.
Every lefty who thinks the Dems are too weak on whatever their particular issue might be. Blacks who want reparations, trannies who want more of whatever, etc. Also folks along for the ride because they like trouble or breaking things or an opportunity to loot.
I expect a much bigger mess than 1968.

When they had the convention in LA the DNC set up a “protest corridor” several blocks away, literally in cages or at least behind fences to keep the people contained and out of sight. Ultimately the courts ruled that was improper, that the whole point of 1A protesting was so that the people in power can see and hear it.
I would not be surprised if they tried something similar in 2024. Maybe under the guise of security protocols, terror threats, etc. Already two people have self immolated this year in protests. TPTB will come up with some rationale to keep protestor at bay.
