I have never seen the movie, TV show, or read the book. But that seems like a false dichotomy.

Cruise was better. His intelligence came through in the role. Werner Hertzog was in his flick. That adds a lot of street cred for me.

A big Ha Ha to all the purists who hated Tom Cruise for being too short to play reacher. Cruise, short or not does a much more believable job. I tried to like the show but all I could see was a big guy that can't act with a bunch of insulting language aimed at offending Christians.

Interestingly, I have no idea what Tom Cruise's politics are.
I'm sure he's a liberal, but he stays pretty quiet, which is very smart.
No sense in alienating half of your fanbase.
You know, the people who pay money to see you and make you rich and famous.
