How Supporting Ukraine Is Revitalizing the U.S. Defense Industrial Base

Congress is facing the most significant and transformational opportunity to strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base (DIB) since the end of World War II. The heritage equipment that the United States has provided to Ukraine for its self-defense in the face of the brazen and illegal invasion by Russian forces in 2022 needs to be replenished to ensure the United States is postured to continue to deter its adversaries. The new hardware will be produced at factories across the nation. Of the $113 billion appropriated by Congress to date related to the conflict in Ukraine, as much as $68 billion is destined to be invested here at home. U.S. support for Ukraine thus offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to sustain a demand signal to address long-standing weaknesses in U.S. DIB systems generally and ordnance and missile production specifically. Examining how U.S. military assistance to Ukraine is being spent and where funds for the U.S. industrial base relevant to Ukraine and future U.S. needs are being invested can help demonstrate how Russia’s war can establish a long-term incentive structure to revitalize the DIB.

Prior to the war in Ukraine, policymakers recognized the need to shift away from a defense posture focused on counterterrorism and counterinsurgency to one prepared to confront rising great power competition. This was articulated in the National Security Strategy adopted by the Trump administration in December 2017. The strategy specifically highlighted the need for a robust and innovative DIB and noted supply chain vulnerabilities. Recognition of the challenges did not result in rectification, as the attention of policymakers pivoted to crises including the Covid-19 pandemic, domestic political unrest, and the end of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. In the face of the continuing supply chain vulnerabilities, these policies were sustained in the Biden administration’s 2022 National Security Strategy”

” If China, Russia, Iran, North Korea aren’t a threat then America doesn’t need to be able to fight a war and make improvements in manufacturing. “

The problem is that they are doing it with imported machinery.

Weber Metals in S. Cal just installed a 60,000 ton forging press for aerospace applications. That’s the biggest press built in decades. But the manufacturer was SMS GmbH of Germany.

The other big presses were built during the US Air Force “Heavy Press” program of the 1950’s.

This old film shows it.

The problem, EVERY manufacturer who made those presses has gone out of business.

Not only do you get the satisfaction of killing thousands of slavs, you’re enriching the military industrial complex at the same time. It’s a win-win!

If the government really saw China as a threat, wouldn’t they be moving heaven and earth to secure our borders and reshoring our manufacturing base instead of relying on our enemy to supply us?

“How Supporting Ukraine Is Revitalizing the U.S. Defense Industrial Base”

I believe that was part of the goal. For instance Northrop Grumman Corp stock was trading at about $335 per share in April of 2021 not long after Biden was installed in the White House. It’s now trading at $460 per share.

General Dynamics was trading at $185 in April of 2021 and is now trading at $285.00.

I bet you will find that every Congressman or his family members owns stock in one of those two or in other defense companies.

Two things, national defense and immigration are two different issues and are different politically, democrats not wanting to end the immigration that they created doesn’t mean that national defense gets totally ignored when it becomes obvious that something has to be done, there are different voices on different issues not a smooth flow and harmony where the party in office is equally committed to all things and represent the issues of both parties.
The border is one fight and this late to the party recognition that has been forced on America about weapon manufacturing is another.

As far as American made, isn’t this article about domestic manufacturing?
