The US competition watchdog has sued to block fashion accessory giant Tapestry's $8.5bn (£6.9bn) takeover of rival Capri.
Tapestry owns handbag makers including Coach and Kate Spade, while Capri's brands include Michael Kors.
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said if allowed, "the deal would eliminate direct head-to-head competition between Tapestry’s and Capri’s brands".
In response Tapestry said "the FTC fundamentally misunderstands both the marketplace and the way in which consumers shop".
Together, the firms employ about 33,000 staff globally but the FTC argued the deal could reduce wages and their benefits.
Coach and Kate Spade are known for what their parent firm calls "accessible luxury" handbags - quality leather and craftsmanship products at affordable prices.

Michael Kors is too common. I like Coach but it’s only affordable at the outlet stores. And Kate Spade committed suicide so I can’t bear to buy a bag with her name on it.
In other words, who cares. I like Dooney
I use a black cordura Molle administrative pouch for a murse. That’s as close as I get to this space.

Yep, they've replaced the African children.
Settle it with a handbag slug out. Put it on pay per view.
The market should be able to come up with 25 companies to make these products. And here in the US. It’s not rocket science
“… the FTC argued the deal could reduce wages and their benefits.”
So it’s not protecting consumers. What else will the FTC make up for its mission?
Well, I’m sure glad that all the other worlds problems are solved so that they can argue over who gets to sell purses to vain and foolish women.
Dooney is a great bag.
I’m a Brahmin woman myself. Like good boots, a solid handbag is worth the money, goes with everything, looks great despite daily use for several years, and doesn’t fall apart.
I’ve passed my used Brahmins onto my daughter-in-law. She passed one onto her sister. Years later, it’s still in use.
Coach went wacko on the colors and Kors doesn’t hold their shape. He designs very comfortable and stylish sandals and shoes, but there are too many fake Kors bags out there. No thanks.
I like Brahmin as well, but I only have one. Both Dooney and Brahmin have cords to attach your keys to, so you always know where they are.
I love that feature!
Convenient pockets to store things and the phone slot on the outside, it makes it easy to grab what you need without even looking. They are the female version of cargo pants...but a lot more stylish.
Any American male should be able to attach a cord for you. Use a quality cord or cable and Shoo-Goo. Clamp it for a couple of days, and it’ll be nearly impossible to remove.
Did you really just use the term ‘murse’?
The world has bigger worries than merchandise 99% will never be able to own.
But Nippon Steel can buy US Steel no problem...
Coach is nice, purchased a few for wife. Now I got her a Carhartt purse. Why? I want her to come home safe! No Rich Bitch Robbery for her…..
“...only affordable at the outlet stores”
Are there any left? Years ago this outlet mall used to have plenty of busloads of shoppers come to it. Now it’s dead;

Long before I ever had enough money to buy a Coach bag, I was robbed on the bus. They just took my wallet right out of my handbag. And then I had my whole purse stolen at the mailbox of my apartment building. I thought the guy lived there so I looked in his eyes as I walked by and watched those eyes become devil eyes. I chased him down the street screaming but to no avail.
Now it depends on where you’re going what kind of bag you carry. Normally I have one that would go over my neck so that people can’t easily steal it. And Coach is not a rich bitch bag, believe me. Try Judith Lieber, Versace, etc.
