Substitute teacher fights student who allegedly used racial slur in crowded Vegas school hallway
NYPost ^ | 04 26 2024 | Nicholas McEntyre

A Las Vegas substitute teacher and a teen student unleashed a barrage of punches on each other after a classroom argument over a reported slur spilled out into a crowded hallway in front of other students.

Re’Kwon Smith, 27, is accused of brawling with the Valley High School student on Thursday when he asked the teen, who allegedly shouted out a racial slur, to leave the classroom, according to 8NewsNow.

The altercation turned physical when the student allegedly placed his hands on Smith.

Video obtained by the outlet captured both parties swinging at each other before Smith connected several times on the pupil, eventually knocking him down.

After knocking down the unidentified student, Smith stood over him seemingly yelling as the student balled up and cowered behind his hands.

Smith remained hovering over the student, landing several more punches until a campus safety monitor and other students helped their classmate off the floor, according to Fox 5 Vegas.

“You’re going to jail, [slur],” the laughing student reportedly shouted as he was escorted away.

“I see a teacher fighting a student, I’m like ‘Wow,'” Valley High School junior Andrew Acevez told KTNV. “And then the teacher is just standing over him, just slapping him, saying stuff to him, and I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy.'”

I’ll do manual labor before I serve again as a substitute teacher. I thought with my education and background I’d be an asset to the school. The students are out of control and treat substitute teachers rudely and total lack of respect. The ESS that hires substitute will not stand behind their employees if the school administration or teachers make accusations against a substitute...one is at the mercy of the school’s entrenched teachers and administration for accusations of “non professionalism”. I found the teachers to be threatened by substitute teachers that are more academically educated than they are and will do anything to protect their “dung hill”.

ReKwon has a past of this behavior which was ignored during his DIE hiring process.

As a retired teacher who occasionally substitutes now, there may have been no DIE involved in the hiring process. Schools are so desperate for subs that they’ll hire almost anyone who doesn’t have a criminal record.

“The student put his hands on him first...”

I’m not sure on this. That seems to be in question as the news broadcast at the below site says no one identified who sruck first. But the bad part on the teacher is when he did knock the student down, he stood over him and swatted him with his right hand. That didn’t look very good as it displayed an aggressive action rather than defence.

Probably Hispanic. What Walther boy taking? Smaller than the teacher, awkward swing, hampered by a heavy backpack. Did he really call the teacher a slur, was it said to someone else or by someone else, or did the teacher imagine it?

Once he briefly defended himself the teacher had a duty to retreat and notify appropriate personnel. If the student continues the attack of course he can defend himself.

Slapping the kid around when he was on the floor and clearly giving up is what is going to get him.

Pretty rare for me to cheer anyone named “Re’Kwon”!

When I was in high school, off campus, I was being a wiseass and a bodybuilder with arms bigger than my legs lifted my off the floor with one hand and said, “I used to have anger issues. I’m better now. But life isn’t like high school!”

Then he let me go. If I knew where he was 40 years on now, I’d send him a thank you note!

“”ReKwon has a past of this behavior which was ignored during his DIE hiring process.”

“Schools are so desperate for subs that they’ll hire almost anyone who doesn’t have a criminal record.””

I ain’t buying that. It took me 3 months to get approval as a substitute teacher in Arizona. They inerviewed me, fingerprinted me, ran a police/fbi check, asked for references and then gave me briefing after breifing. They were aware of ReKwons past and gave him the job because he they wanted their DIE roster to show how woke they were. It’s clear ReKwon hates white people and took it out on the white student.

That certainly doesn’t sound good.

(Of course, I didn’t actually read the article.)

“AFterall, why would any student or person use a slur against someone who is older and bigger than you out of the blue for no reason at all.”

In the early 80s, a good friend was teaching high school. A kid came up to him the hallway - a kid he didn’t know from Adam, cussed at him and spit in his face. My friend decked him with one punch. Didn’t think, just reacted.

The school sided with my friend (multiple witnesses). He left teaching the next year. But yeah...there are students who do stuff like that because they think they CAN!

I thought I was a boxer until a little Puerto Rican half my size tuned me up and whipped my @$$. He probably saved my life. To this day I’m grateful.

Yes, they fingerprint here (MO), too, but the school will pay the fee if you pass. They have recently dropped the requirement that you be a college graduate, I think now the standard is two years. The requirements for subbing are going to vary by state.

It used to be that I was limited to how many hours I could sub before putting my pension payment in jeopardy. That has been waived for the last couple of years.

Because I sub at the school I retired from, I get virtually no grief from any of the students. I had their parents, aunts, uncles, etc. But, the general atmosphere of the school, and I assume many schools is much different than when I retired. Kids feel quite free to say whatever is on their mind to anyone. Respect for teachers by students is low, and thanks to Wuhan, kids are a couple of years behind where they should be.

I really don’t know enough about what happened to venture an opinion on the fight itself.

But, I don’t believe a teacher should run from or become a punching bag for some punk kid ignominiously referred to as a “student”.

If the kid threw the first blow, he should take his ass whooping like a man, shake hands with the guy that did it, and stfu.
