Florida GOP Rep. Posey abruptly announces retirement

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) abruptly announced on Friday that he will not seek reelection, after initially planning to run for another term.

Posey’s announcement — if made earlier — could have easily attracted a spirited Republican primary, with politicians from the state’s Space Coast region already eyeing the seat once Posey retired. Florida’s 8th congressional district is a solid Republican seat.

Instead the 76-year-old incumbent’s announcement came shortly after qualifying officially ended and after his hand-picked replacement — former state Senate President Mike Haridopolos — had already quietly jumped into the race.

In a statement posted online, Posey said that he was “looking forward to another spirited campaign for a final term in office. However, earlier this week circumstances beyond my control now require me to suspend my re-election campaign.”

Posey did not elaborate what caused his turnabout. He’s one of roughly two dozen Republican incumbents not returning to the lower chamber next year — all in safe seats — an unusually high number for a party in the majority.

No way it’s that high

Well.

I had D+40 in 2018 right here starting in June, and I was called every foul name in the book all summer and fall.

Turned out D+40 was exactly correct.

Most people here are believers in the FR Imaginary GOP - I'm not. I'm well aware that the only thing Americans hate worse than Democrats - is Republicans.

Don’t blame him. Its a dirty playground up there and life is too short. Let someone else do it.

We will see who ends up in that seat.

“Much better than a primary with a bunch of wannabees splitting the right-wing vote and letting some squish similar to John Rutherford, Mike Waltz, Vern Buchanan, Carlos Gimenez, Maria Salazar, etc. become the next new congressman from Florida.”

This is a typical stunt by Posey.

Posey is my Congressman and although I’ve never met him he seems to vote the way I want him to. Probably got sick.

I really don’t think there enough competitive districts left after all the new maps for that to happen.

Well, he’s 76 so his health, or his wife’s, may have taken a sudden turn for the worse.

This used to be Joe Scarborough seat.
I hope he will not follow his footsteps!

The Democrats are continuing to outwork, outraise, and out organize our side - big time. They also have fraud/trickery which favors them...but when they already are given every traditional electoral advantage in the book while our base sits on their behinds and keeps their wallets closed, any fraud becomes much easier to pull off (if it isn’t close, cheating doesn’t work) - if they even need it.

There is no way that things like Leftists stopping blocking ambulances from taking critically ill patients to the hospital and climbing up on it and dancing is something people would vote for if they were made aware of this...nor people taking kids to strip clubs, given x-rated books, etc. But, the Democrats have a masterful marketing campaign - flush with cash for ads and propaganda, with the media on their side, portraying Republicans as wanting to “ban” and “censor” things if they aren’t being provided by the taxpayers in schools and libraries. It is a winning message for the Democrats to turn abortion into the family values vote - when you are the only game in town marketing a message, that message is what will prevail. Not wanting strippers in schools is “discrimination”.

So...watching all of this, I would not be surprised with your prediction. We actually started out in a strong position, but the Biden / Dem ad propaganda campaign has now been in full force to establish and completely control the narrative once again with no opposition, their field offices are fully staffed an operating at full force, etc.

I am not optimistic at all about how this is going. I don’t see how we catch up...with a base that believes the key to victory is to party among themselves at boat parades, car parades, rallies, etc. vs. shelling out the cash and doing the grunt work while the Democrats are reaching out to the average people at home watching Andy Griffith and Wheel of Fortune, we are screwed.

Though I will add - this district and this retirement is not one of the reasons. This seat looks like it is as safe as it otherwise would be.

The key words in your reply are “once again with no opposition”.

Expecting what I call the “FR Imaginary GOP” to be that opposition is a serious error. Not until the actually existing GOP is flushed down the toilet of American history, and replaced with a serious right wing, nationalist party with serious ideas led by serious men, will we have a shot at turning things around.
