Kristi Noem has ‘no shot’ as Trump’s VP pick after puppy-killing controversy: sources

Gov. Kristi Noem has “no shot” at being Donald Trump’s running mate after revealing in a forthcoming book that she shot and killed her puppy, sources close to the 45th president tell The Post.

***

“She was already unlikely to be picked as VP, but had a shot,” the person said of Noem, who has been widely projected to be on Trump’s shortlist.

“After this, it’s just impossible.”

Noem writes, according to the Guardian, that she executed Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer, after determining that the pooch’s “aggressive personality” made her “untrainable” as a hunting dog.

“It was not a pleasant job,” the 52-year-old recounts, “but it had to be done.”

*** “Trump isn’t a dog person necessarily,” “but I think he understands that you can’t choose a puppy killer as your pick, for blatantly obvious reasons.”

A second source told The Post that Trump “likes Kristi a lot,” but was “disappointed when hearing the ‘dog’ story. ***

Unfettered, Cricket attacked the family’s chickens, “grabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another,” according to the governor.

When Noem tried to restrain the dog, Cricket “whipped around to bite me,” and was “the picture of pure joy” during the fowl-killing spree.

In the same excerpt, Noem described in graphic detail her killing a male goat who was “nasty and mean” because it was uncastrated, and “loved to chase” her children around.

To kill the goat, she “dragged him to the gravel pit” where she disposed of Cricket and had to shoot him repeatedly to finish the job.

Didn’t she reverse herself and sign the law to keep men out of women’s sports in SD?

She should have shot, shoveled and shut up. Shooting these bad actor animals is OK with me. But will be misunderstood by millions of pet loving Democrats and Republicans too. Who will never get that these matters are done much rougher on a ranch or farm.

Someone should tell Diana Glebova that a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer is NOT a "puppy".

Lie like The Media...

The "puppy" was the human equivalent of 18 years old.

You know - like a month-old human baby. /s

I’m sure Cricket will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge. Waiting to sink her fangs into Noem’s leg.

From what I read at the time, she didn’t like the original bill because she felt it was flawed and would be effectively challenged. She signed an improved bill.

Sort of like men courting women in the past thousand years. the silly looking charade results in women being able to discern which males are the best in mate selection rituals——except when the women act irrationally (Millionaire author Danielle Steele falling in love with a prisoner and having a marriage ceremony in the correctional facility). But finding out about gambling or drug addiction secrets and philandering habits may be discovered during dating.

So our election process shows up the weeping Ed Muskie in 1972, John Edwards* in 2008 and others we are glad didn’t go farther.

*Though he was not convicted of any crime, the revelation that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and fathered a child while his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer, gravely damaged his public image and essentially ended his political career.
Now the media takes away our chance by boosting their Leftist heroes to win.

I am not a fan of her, but fact she put down a mean dog doesn’t bother me at all.. if anything it probably improves my opinion of her a bit.

I don’t want her as VP, but this incident is exactly what we need in leadership, people who realize there are bad animals out there and you don’t treat them with kid gloves, you put them down.

Don’t get me wrong I fully understand why this would be a problem politically, with all the soft panty waste voters out there, and I have ZERO desire for her to be VP... but on this particular matter, doesn’t bother me at all, that’s what you do with a bad animal, period.

It was a stupid thing to do, a stupid thing to say and if she gets on the ticket, I might have to vote for Trump and work hard against her. But I won’t let someone like that near the Oval Office without letting everyone I know know that she’s a bust as a human being. Biden’s humanity is already well known.

Either in the book or on Twitter she made the comment that by telling this story some folks will say she is a poor politician, and so be it. Later posts seem to indicate that she is just telling it like it is, and the hard decisions she has had to make both in life and in politics, but she doesn’t care about the optics - just the results.

She is trying to portray herself as the common man and an outsider. But miscalculated on this one I think.

Compare to Nixon’s famous “Checker’s Speech” that kept him in the running. (Hmm - also was meant to appeal to the common man.)

Just going to cut-n-paste this every time it shows up...

Politician writes several books.

Liberal media finds ONE paragraph to exploit. Repeats endlessly.

Mass of people who don’t really care repeat endlessly.

What actually happened and why no longer matters.

Dogs who turn aggressive and have a bite history will be rejected by most shelters and cannot be retrained or re-homed.

Of course, FR’s own “We hate Noem” club won’t care either. Any rumor or innuendo they can use again her, they will repeat like a bunch of dyspeptic harbor seals.

Does she have issues as a politician? Yes. Is this one of them? No.

“She was already unlikely to be picked as VP, but had a shot,”

Then why even write this crap article other than to trash Noem?

FWIW, I have a shot too. Just don't tell anyone that I shoot starlings with pellet rifles.

That goes on all the time and it is humane

More humane than giving to dog up to a shelter?

Shooting a ornery uncastrated goat multiple times because it chased children is humane?

Apparently, your definition of humane doesn't include the concept of kindness.

Wire-haired pointers are generally easy to train. They have a high prey drive so it's essential to train them young. Her story doesn't exactly convince me. It was a PUPPY. If it was that out of control as a puppy, it leads me to believe she didn't put enough effort into 1) training and 2) not putting it into situations where it could/would cause trouble, especially after the first "incident". Did she make an effort to re-home it some place without other livestock? Did she reach out to a professional trainer? So many questions...

Our landscapers had a wire-haired pointer puppy younger than Noem's that they were raising as a hunting dog. Very well trained. Sweet dog, not a problem at all. I know they all have different personalities, but I think in general, you get out of a puppy what you put into it for the most part.

That said, there are acceptable times when animals need to put down. When my dad was young, he lived out in the country. He had to shoot his beloved German Shepherd because it had contracted rabies, was foaming at the mouth, and was chasing my uncle trying to kill him.

There have been some freepers (primarily in other threads) aggressively defending what she did, even going so far as to suggest that because the dog attacked and killed chickens, it might have eventually attacked children. I just can’t see it that way.

—-

“Dan Lussen, a professional hunting dog trainer, told Rolling Stone that a 14-month-old dog is a ‘baby that doesn’t know any better.’

‘Why would you put a dog down with these instincts? It’s a hunting dog, and you got chickens — he doesn’t know the difference,’ Lussen added.

Zak George, a professional dog trainer, told CNN over the weekend that the behavior exhibited by Cricket was ‘very typical adolescent behavior out of a dog that’s been bred to have endless stamina and endurance’”

—-

Now, obviously the above quotes were provided to the most leftist of left wing media. But on their own merits, the quotes themselves make more sense to me than the idea that an undisciplined dog was some sort of ticking time bomb that had to be shot. That conclusion and action from Noem just seems lazy and depressing to me.
