“Part of how I think we’re going to turn the corner on the unacceptable level of roadway deaths that we just lived with for my entire lifetime is through these kinds of technologies,” said Buttigieg, who is 42.

Let’s ask Petey if they will prevent rear-ending.

Auto braking is terrible. Hate it, had in a rental car or two.

How many more killed and injured as a result of rear enders?

while it may be a great thing, it is exactly these sort of mandates that continue to drive up the cost of a new car.

But a car that imagines it knows when to brake, no thanks.
TESLA’s self-driving? No thanks.

My 2018 Honda CRV has adaptive cruise control which along with lane-keeping lets the car practically drive itself on the interstate. Do I trust it to do so? Of course not. Do I take my hands off of the steering wheel? No.

But, that said, it is almost uncanny how the car will hit the brakes when the car in front of slows down, even coming to a complete stop when there is a traffic jam.

I’ve read that the older one is, the less one trusts the technology. I’m a geezer, so I don’t trust it at all, but it does make longer trips much easier.

Requiring this will just increase the cost of cars, which since we should all reallybe taking public transportation might be the point of the thing.

In a sane society, old age is generally associated with wisdom.

Maybe this will end up like the Democrats push for EV mandate ... a big flop like the rest of this administration’s success stories

Has anybody noticed that the level of competence of drivers on the roads these days has declined significantly? It seems worse since COVID.

With all these new mandated “safety” devices, blind spot warning, rear camera, front camera, radar assist breaking, radar disengage of cruise control, air bags all around, speed limiters on some vehicles, etc. there are people driving today that are absolute MORONS. They drive like idiots and think their “safety” devices will protect them.

Just like there a lot of people totally lacking critical thinking skills, skills needed for driving are also severely degrading.

The CPU is smarter than you. Knowing how government works, I suspect that the default will be brakes on, unless the car’s computer reports that the system is functional. That said, I am sure that we will be able to buy something on eBay — made in China, of course — which we can plug-in to defeat the system.

Yup, let’s just add more costs to already over expensive vehicles. Helps da poor, ya know. I’m going to purchase front seats to the guillotine mass execution sites constructed for “servicing” the left-wing slime molds after the great tipping point.

As far right as I am I can’t say I agree with disabling anti lock brakes.

Car companies now can mask component failures with software. For instance high end cars who’s alignment is bad can compensate for that with software so that the driver never really knows his car is screwed up.

The same can be said for brakes. Carmakers can have cars whose front rear / left right brake bias is screwed up and compensate for that with ABS. They don’t have to make brakes right anymore of they have software fix it for them.

Just a thought.

What's the average price of a new car? $42K? How much will this add? How much liability will it bring when the braking is supposed to have failed or when it supposedly operated when it should not have?

A hyper regulated state becomes indistinguishable from a command economy. Like Pharoah or the First Party Secretary, the butt humper has decreed automatic braking, and so it must be done.

“Has anybody noticed that the level of competence of drivers on the roads these days has declined significantly? It seems worse since COVID.”

I think something around that time lowered the IQ of almost everyone by about 20 points.

and it was by design. You might ask how that could have happened and by what mechanism. We know that the modRna that they shot people with can easily cross the blood brain barrier, and when brain cells started making spike proteins peoples own immune system destroyed them.
