1 in 26 Uyghurs Jailed, Accounting 1/3 of China's Prison Population: Uyghur Human Rights Project Report
Asian News International ^ | 1 in 26 Uyghurs jailed, accounting 1/3 of China's prison population: Uyghur Human Rights Project rep

An annual report by a Uyghur advocacy group revealed ongoing persecution in China's far-western Xinjiang province, with an estimated 1 in 26 Uyghurs jailed, accounting for a third of China's prison population, 3.5 times the world's highest rate of imprisonment.

A new Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) report indicates that Uyghurs, Turkic and other non-Han peoples in the Uyghur Region account for more than a third (34 per cent) of China's estimated prison population, despite making up only one per cent of China's overall population. When accounting for the total regional population, the Uyghur region has the highest prison rate in the world at an estimated 2,234 per 100,000.

A UHRP Insights column by Ben Carrdus, UHRP Senior Researcher, and Peter Irwin, UHRP Associate Director for ResearchAdvocacy suggests that Uyghurs, Turkic and other non-Han peoples in the region are imprisoned at a rate of 3,814 people per 100,000.

In comparison, Han people throughout China are estimated to be imprisoned at a rate of 80 per 100,000. In other words, Uyghurs and other non-Han people in the Uyghur Region are estimated to be imprisoned at just over 47 times the rate of Han people.

"The actual situation in Xinjiang may even be worse, said UHRP senior researcher Ben Carrdus, who wrote the report."The findings are based on information from Xinjiang High People's Procuratorate annual reports, which prosecutes criminal defendants, as well as data from the website of China's Ministry of Justice. The report estimates that a total of 578,500 Uyghurs or other Turkic people were in jail as of 2022.

The report indicates that Uyghurs experience higher death rates in prison than other ethnic groups in China, though death penalty figures are not publicly available because they are considered a state secret.

The UHRP believes Uyghurs receive severe sentences, such as at least 10 years in prison for minor actions like studying the Quran or teaching it to children, so that the rate of death sentences among them may be higher.

The situation of Uyghur persecution in China is deeply concerning and has drawn international attention. The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority group primarily located in the Xinjiang region of China. Reports and testimonies from various sources, including human rights organisations, indicate widespread human rights abuses and repression targeting the Uyghur population.

These abuses include arbitrary detention in internment camps, forced labour, cultural and religious suppression, mass surveillance, and torture. The Chinese government has consistently denied allegations of mistreatment, instead portraying its actions as counter-terrorism measures aimed at maintaining stability and security in the region.

The international community has called for an independent investigation into the situation in Xinjiang, however, the issue remains complex due to China's geopolitical influence.

Imagine being a Uyghur, and seeing people supporting Palestinians and ignoring them, and looking at the difference.

Well, it is cool to protest against Israel, not China.

Of course both the paleostinians and Uyghurs are muslim, so I don't care about either of them because they are a threat to civilization.

Given the corruption in America’s judicial system, why should I care about China?

This is the real genocide, thousands murdered and sent to camps, chicoms forcing intermarriage and forced abortion. Strange how none of the college students are marching in the streets for them.

China’s “Justice” system is the template for the US “Justice” system.

You are seeing it all wrong.

What “human rights” issues bubbles to the top depends on if they can be used politically or to make money.

We will not address China because they are economically important to us. The are where much of the US manufacturing takes place, hold onto US securities and a major market to which we export both goods and services.

Consequently, Taiwan doesn’t matter and is forgotten already, seldom mentioned. As is Tibet which is never even mentioned anymore. We gave China most favored trade status and supported them entering the WTO as tanks drove over pro democracy students on Tienanmen Square, and it didn’t matter if a Republican or Democrat was in office (Bush H., Clinton, Bush W. Obama), they all supported it.

Forced abortions, the disappearance of dissidents, questionable organ harvesting policies, none of this matters. Nor does the oppression of religion by an officially atheist state, and fact that China is a single party communist regime. You see, themes like “democracy” we only mention when convenient, for example, Ukraine. The fact that China executes more people than any other nation on earth, pollutes more than any other nation on earth, mass censors, tortures, does not matter because they are “to important to fail.”

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/global-manufacturing-scorecard-how-the-us-compares-to-18-other-nations/ (China is nearly 1/3 of the GLOBAL manufacturing base, about 1.5 TIMES the manufacturing output of the US: https://cdn.statcdn.com/Infographic/images/normal/20858.jpeg

When you go into Target, Walmart, on line Amazon, or even buy an Apple Iphone, most of it is “made in China:” https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP._qSPiP5tvgk8Ys1-wbMsoAHaP6%26pid%3DApi&f=1&ipt=c3b454dbc51a30d29954e19137dda981aa99cfa454460658d81c85847535a545&ipo=images

For the US, China is simply put economically to important, and besides, China has a major political influence in the US through lobbying efforts, their subsidiaries operating here that can donate to political parties and candidates, their influence on the US media which they have been buying / courting for years.

China= single party communist regime

China= one of the worst human rights records imaginable

China= military expansionist / massive growth in last years / Tibet / Taiwan

We’ll grumble a little in our media occasionally, but all your bureaucracy and political ruling class will toe the line regards China because of the economic interests at stake and their political influence.

We apply our certain ideas like sovereignty, democracy, human rights, freedom of speech, etc. and when they impact our foreign policies selectively and conveniently.

Other examples: Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Undemocratic regimes ruled by totalitarian leaders, horrible human rights records, where we keep them in power because it benefits us. Again, if they do something we may grumble for a little while, but our bureaucracy and the elite in DC will not change course: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45812399 (US Resident and journalist that was dismembered and disemboweled, partially alive, at the order of the prince of Saudi Arabia in a fellow NATO nation, Turkey)
