Pretty much anything you can make with shrimp, you can make with cicadas.

Both my dogs and cats like the things. My cats catch them on the fly if they fly close to the ground. I think I’ll pass on them, though....

While sitting in a dentist’s chair, I watched a morning TV segment which involved cooking cicadas.

After the chef worked his magic, a group of adults sampled the cicadas and expressed approval. But there was one boy in the group who popped one in his mouth and instantly spat it out.

Kids are often more honest than adults.

They should have served cicadas, “lobster of the trees” at the Met Gala last night - to show all us peons the correct way forward - nope. You can be sure they were dining on organic, grass-fed Wagu beef and sustainably-farmed lamb, etc.

Not sure about where you are but (Thank God) cicadas are not a problem here in So Cal - we have plenty of other problems of our own, the introduction of mosquitos in 2011, for example...

I visit family in Indiana and they certainly get cicadas during the summer - huge ones! My relatives aren’t bothered by them but I usually run screaming indoors - then the “shells” are all over the patio in the morning, which they just sweep up. I stayed away this year b/c: “This spring Indiana will see the emergence of the 17-year cicadas.”

Hate the things and the idea of eating them makes me wanna....

I’ve actually had fried Cicada once, if you can get past the ick factor, they are actually pretty good, I actually think they taste better than shrimp.

They are perfectly welcome to do so themselves. Nobody is stopping them. I’ll stick with the big marine variety.

Speaking of Louisiana, the chefs are already gearing up to serve soft shell cicadas in restaurants or you can cook them yourself at home.
