School board in Virginia votes to restore Confederate names

The education board for a rural Virginia county voted early on Friday to restore the names of Confederate generals stripped from two schools in 2020, making the mostly white, Republican district the first in the U.S. to take such an action.

By a 5-1 vote, the Shenandoah County board overturned its 2020 decision that stripped a public high school and elementary school of their original names honoring three military leaders of the pro-slavery South in the Civil War.

Under the board's action, Mountain View High School will again become known as Stonewall Jackson High, while Honey Run Elementary School will revert to the name Ashby Lee Elementary.

The names belong to some of the most well-known military leaders of the Confederacy. Robert E. Lee was commander of the Army of Northern Virginia; Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a Confederate infantry general, and Turner Ashby was a rebel cavalry commander. All of them were Virginians.

They started the Revolution righteously.,/p>

AH! HERE WE HAVE IT. What is "righteous"? That's for the people of each state to decide.

It is interesting you say that, because Cooldidge was from MA. The Catholics in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s in MA. We’re VERY Anti- Communist. Then MA went Cockeyed, starting with McGovern, to the point that it is now, along with Vermont, one of the most leftist States in the Union.

Massachusetts didn't suddenly become a bunch of big government loving, judgmental, joyless, humorless, self righteous, A-holes. They've always been that way.

Your view of the American Indian at least as how you expressed it is still naive. They were a neolithic people who surprisingly enough behaved neolithically. They had no special corner of the market on morality in how they interacted with peoples outside of their particular ‘people’. If in certain competition with others firm friendship was called for, they did that. If continuous war and even genocide they did that. If conditions changed and a problem developed with the firm friendship case. The solution was such that massacre and genocide solved the problem they did that! In short, they behaved just like any other group of humans did in those situations. Archaeology of neolithic Europe, Asia and Africa show many examples. In the case of North\South America they ran into competitors who were somewhat more advanced technologically. More importantly thanks to the contiguous Eurasian landmass Europeans had a better tested immune system. That lessor immune system the natives here had due to their splendid isolation all of a sudden that isolation wasn't so splendid. Accidental biowarfare was truly how the West was won from sea to shining sea. It wouldn't have mattered when we palefaces had arrived blowing kisses and throwing skittles the result would have been the same. Of course, it's more socially & politically popular to wallow in self-guilt about being on the surviving side. It had to be done immorally right? We shouldn't be here!

the way we Palefaces treated the Natives was no different from how one tribe treated another. The strong took what they could. The weak endured what they had too. Yes, some (not all but some) tribes could be absolutely vicious. Still, the reality is that the federal government made treaties and broke them, committed ethnic cleansing and genocide. If you want to go around the world you'll find conduct as bad or worse just about everywhere you look but they did do it.

then again slavery goes back as far as recorded time. It was practiced all over the world. It wasn't particular to the West or to America or to the Southern states. Yet that doesn't stop people from moralizing endlessly about it.

I can and do disagree with both but then again, that's easy for me to say. I'm a product of the late 20th century in America. Everybody around me disagreed with both all my life. I was never taught otherwise. I'm a product of my time. So were the people back then. That's why I'm not so quick to judge. When I was taught history, I was taught that Presentism is the cardinal sin....the one thing you should NEVER do if you truly want to understand the past. It seems that's all anybody does today. Its so much more easy being self righteous and smug than it is to read and think and gain some actual understanding of the past.

...”

As did everybody else including those “not-so-vicious” tribes. You just have a fuzzy snapshot of their history recorded by poorly informed observers with little to no written native sources. Easy to hide successes and atrocities if there is no written language therefore no historians to hail the victories and\or damn the atrocities. Minoan civilization for a long time was hailed as peaceful purely commercial, now they’re finding weapon caches from the period and a local weapons industry.

Note: I always wondered how modern historians could draw the “peaceful Minoans” conclusion. The “Theseus and the Minotaur” legend clearly states Athens was a tributary to Knossos, so much so they had to send their youth to Crete for human sacrifice! You don’t have to accept the story “in toto” to conclude that somehow Knossos had real physical control and power on mainland Greece, if not Athens then somewhere.

No you dumb ass Leftist. Lincoln DID invade the sovereign territory of the state of South Carolina. He sent a heavily armed fleet to invade their territory.

Ignorant ramblings?

Yes!

The only ignorance here is you and your childish arguments.

Nope! What I've said is factual and I've backed it up with quotes and sources and links. All you bring is invective, ignorance and stupidity.

We're well aware of that dipshit. Nobody is disputing that. That doesn't change the fact that Lincoln started the war for money and empire.

As Joe K has pointed out to you a hundred times here the fallacy of your Corwin Amendment argument and the fact that Lincoln was legitamately resupplying a federal installation , property of The United States government and not provoking an armed engagement and came under fire from Charleston Harbor shore batteries.

Fulminate all you want Bird brain.

You'll never change 1865 so man up and admit you arguments are mute and leave it at that because I'm going to be the bone int the throat of you Confederates and faux conservatives as long as you keep it up.

As I've pointed out to JoeK, The fort sat on South Carolina's sovereign territory and belonged to the state. The Territorial waters up to 3 miles offshore belong to the state. Lincoln deliberately started a war for money and empire. Slavery was one thing the North was more than happy to compromise over. All of his weak arguments to the contrary have failed.

You'll never change history so admit your propaganda is just lying bullshit because I'm never going to stop refuting your propaganda, lies and BS about it.

Nope! Fort Sumter was ceded to the Federal government early in the nineteenth century. South Carolina ceded it to the United States. On December 17, 1836, South Carolina officially ceded all “right, title and, claim” to the site of Fort Sumter to the United States.

Also South Carolina which had owned multiple forts, namely Fort Moultrie, Castle Pinckney, and Fort Johnson ceded them, along with sites for the future erection of forts, to the Federal Government in 1805.

The proper course of action would have been to purchase the property or properties back.

Note I will not participate any further in these “count the angels dancing on the head of a pin” Civil War discussions.

I not changing the history. You're trying to change it. Your trying to justify 1861 and and re write 1865.

He's pointed out all the same lies and revisionism you always engage in and then your resort to ad hominems when your arguments are refuted and admittedly I do too but only after my patience is reaching the limit. I've stated previously the facts as to the South secession, it's first use military engagement and it's invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Closing the door on this for now.

Nope! When South Carolina seceded they could under their eminent domain power claim any land within their sovereign territory just as any country (or state) may.

the Confederate states DID send a delegation to Washington DC to negotiate a reasonable separation agreement where issues of property and assets and apportionment of the national debt, etc would be worked out. They made a good faith effort. It was the Lincoln administration which refused to meet with them.

You are attempting to revise history here. Prior to the 1980s even most Academics did not subscribe to the All About Slavery myth. That was a bunch of 1960s Leftists who really started pushing that in the 1980s during their long march through the institutions. Prior to that, most would have said either that it was a mix of reasons OR would have agreed with Charles Beard that the war was really all about the money. You clearly don't know the historiography.

You're trying to rewrite 1861 so as to whitewash the fact that the federal government violated the Constitution and the Founder's principles in order to fight a war for money and empire and to impose a government upon people who did not consent to it. I've pointed out his lies and propaganda he always resorts to as well as his childish namecalling of Chief Justice Taney and his attempts to pretend Chaney alone decided Dred Scott instead of the entire SCOTUS whenever his BS claims are refuted by the facts. I've pointed out to you several times that the Southern states were more than happy to leave in peace. It was Lincoln who insisted on war and who took the acts of aggression that started the war - deliberately. I'll keep repeating as many times as are necessary for you to grasp that.

You clarified many points that I left implied. As you affirm, the industrial revolution was changing Western Civilization sweepingly... As for Cuba, Yankee colonialization somewhat preserved slavery in the form of super cheap labor (sugar plantations), but that's another story.

In the early 50s, at about age 12, I moved from Virginia to a small town in Florida long infamous for racism and a race war. I was beaten up in the town square in front of the fire station, plenty of onlookers, as a ' n----er lover'. Some years later I went to college in Boston where I was treated a bit as the opposite. I have lived both sides of that dustup and I paid my dues.

I choose to avoid the 'arguments' and try to stick to the objective truths - as much as possible.
